After a routine doctor’s visit, Dancing With the Stars co-host, Brooke Burke-Charvet has spent the last several months trying to find the underlying cause of a lump found on her thyroid. She underwent a biopsy but the results were inconclusive so more tests were ordered. Brooke recently received the results of those tests and the news was devastating. Her doctor informed her that she has thyroid cancer.
Brooke told her fans in a YouTube video, “This summer and the last few months have been about a whole lot of research and a lot of doctor’s appointments for me. I got my results back and they were atypical.” She explains, “Which means that the doctors couldn’t confirm whether the nodule was cancerous or benign. So I had to go in and do a whole bunch of additional tests and get second opinions.”
When she got the results of those tests, “They were not good.” She explained, “I need to have thyroid surgery and have a thyroidectomy, which means that I’m going to have a nice big scar right here across my neck.” She continued, “And I don’t get to just walk around and pretend like nothing happened or not follow up or not share it because it’s going to be pretty much dead center.”
Brooke told her fans, “I don’t want anybody to read about it and get the wrong idea or think that I’m sick because I’m not.” She said, “I feel really good and actually I’ve never felt better.” She explains, “That’s what’s so crazy about this whole thing.”
“I went in for a regular physical,” Brooke said. “And that’s how I discovered this.” Like anyone who receives devastating news about his or her health, Brooke said, “I never ever, ever thought I was going to get that phone call with bad news. I guess the truth is, I’m always so used to being in control and taking care of everybody and all my kids, and now I find myself in this really out-of-control situation,” the mother of four said. “I’m going to make a positive out of this negative thing. I’m going to be a really good patient and I’m going to do everything that I need to do.”
Brooke went on to say that after hearing the news, it took her a few months to “really wrap my head around this” but “now I’m good and I’m ready to deal with it, and I’m going to be fine.”
If you can imagine, Brooke’s doctor told her, “This is a good kind of cancer to have – ‘good cancer,’” she chuckled. “That sounds so crazy! But my doctor did tell me that this is a happily-ever-after ending kind of thing.”
Brooke went on to say she was feeling good and her doctors have given her a good prognosis. “I will keep you posted and I’m going to fight through this.”
