Top Chef Seattle Recap: Thanksgiving Turkey Battle

It’s a special holiday cook-off between two super-star judges on the Bravo reality TV show, Top Chef: Seattle. Tom Colicchio and Emeril Lagasse don their chef coats and hit the kitchen to lead their teams in a spectacular Thanksgiving battle. Who advances in the competition thanks to their culinary skills? Keep reading to find out!This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Emmy and James Beard Award-winning series that is sure to have lots of drama this season! The winning chef will receive $125,000 furnished by Healthy Choice, a feature in Food & Wine magazine, a showcase at the Annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and will earn the title of “Top Chef.”

The 17 cheftestants are in Seattle and will be serving Thanksgiving dinner to the judges. It takes a mix of personality, knowledge and skills to win the coveted title of Top Chef and everyone is eyeing it up!

This week, guest judge Food & Wine Editor-in-Chief Dana Cowin joins Emeril Lagasse, head judge Tom Colicchio and host Padma Lakshmi.

The contestants are Lizzie Binder from Napa; Micah Fields from Los Angeles; John Tesar from Dallas; Joshua Valentine from Oklahoma City; Kristen Kish from Boston; Carla Pellegrino from Las Vegas; Chrissy Camba from Chicago; Kuniko Yagi from Los Angeles; Eliza Gavin from Telluride; Tyler Wiard from Denver; Brooke Williamson from Los Angeles; Danyele McPherson from Dallas; Sheldon Simeon from Hawaii; Josie Smith-Malave from Miami; Stefan Richter from Finland; Cris “CJ” Jacobsen from Studio City; and Bart Vandaele from Washington D.C.

In this week’s Quickfire, the chefs must make different varieties of dumplings from all over the world. Unfortunately, Kuniko doesn’t get the chance to plate her food; therefore the judges can’t taste her dumplings. Josie wins the Quickfire and gets immunity.

In the Elimination Challenge, Tom and Emeril lead their teams in an epic Thanksgiving battle. Emeril decides to put together a spicy Cajun menu and Tom chooses to put an Italian spin on his menu.

In Emeril’s kitchen, the Gray team consists of Josie who makes the turkey; Danyele who makes Emeril’s mom’s stuffing; Kristin who puts together a vegetable dish; Tyler cooks gumbo; Brooke makes sweet potatoes; Kuniko makes pave; Chrissy makes bread-pudding; John cooks mini pumpkin pies and Sheldon makes greens.  

In Tom’s kitchen, the Red team consists of CJ who cooks the turkey; Carla who makes soup; Bart who makes greens; Josh makes ravioli; Micah makes Brussels sprouts; Lizzie cooks mashed potatoes, Stefan makes a pie; and Eliza makes chocolate dessert.

The judges feel that the Red team did a better job and they win the challenge. At the judges table, Carla is selected as the winner for her soup.

In the bottom: Josie who is selected for her under cooked turkey; Tyler for the lack of flavor in his gumbo; Sheldon for his raw greens; and Kuniko for her raw pave. Josie has immunity so Kuniko is eliminated from the competition.
