According to Entertainment Weekly, Simon Cowell joins the ranks of other celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and the Kardashains who have been targeted in prank phone calls to the police department. These prank calls are called “swatting” and involve someone posing as the celebrity or giving an anonymous tip regarding the celebrity who then reports a false emergency in order to get SWAT teams and police officers involved.
So what happened with Simon Cowell? A prankster whose number was traced to location outside of Beverly Hills contacted the Beverly Hills Police Department on Sunday regarding a disturbance. The caller claimed, “That someone had been tied up with duct tape and needed assistance” and then gave the address of Simon Cowell’s residence as the location where the victim was being restrained.
Officer Lincoln Hoshino said, although “The call was so ridiculously done it had no credibility with the dispatcher … The dispatcher immediately suspected it was a fake,” they had to check it out just to be on the safe side. Police officers rushed to Cowell’s home to ensure everything was okay. They made contact with Cowell and were able to confirm that the claims were fake.
Estimates show that more than 400 swatting incidents occur every year. Wow, that’s a serious waste of time for police and other emergency responders! These numbers were enough for congress to take action against these pranksters in June. Swatting is a crime and anyone caught and subsequently convicted in connection with a swatting prank will face severe federal charges and a 5 to 10 year prison term.
