Top Chef Seattle Recap: 1950s Food Flashback

The chefs go back in time when they’re asked to re-create an original 1950s menu from a popular and well respected restaurant. The competition is heating up on the Bravo reality TV series, Top Chef: Seattle. From butchering their own cuts of beef to cooking dishes from the 1950–these cheftestants are pushing their culinary skills to the test. Plus, it’s the first double elimination of the season–keep reading to find out which two chefs must pack up their knives!

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Emmy and James Beard Award-winning series that is sure to have lots of drama this season! The winning chef will receive $125,000 furnished by Healthy Choice, a feature in Food & Wine magazine, a showcase at the Annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and will earn the title of “Top Chef.”

The 16 cheftestants are in Seattle and will be serving Thanksgiving dinner to the judges. It takes a mix of personality, knowledge and skills to win the coveted title of Top Chef and everyone is eyeing it up!

The contestants are Lizzie Binder from Napa; Micah Fields from Los Angeles; John Tesar from Dallas; Joshua Valentine from Oklahoma City; Kristen Kish from Boston; Carla Pellegrino from Las Vegas; Chrissy Camba from Chicago; Eliza Gavin from Telluride; Tyler Wiard from Denver; Brooke Williamson from Los Angeles; Danyele McPherson from Dallas; Sheldon Simeon from Hawaii; Josie Smith-Malave from Miami; Stefan Richter from Santa Monica; Cris “CJ” Jacobsen from Studio City; and Bart Vandaele from Washington D.C.

This week, guest judge Naomi Pomeroy–a Top Chef Masters alum–joins host Padma Lakshmi. For the Quickfire, the chefs must literally butcher themselves a piece of meat from two primal cuts of beef. With time ticking the chefs hurry to get their meat from the giant slabs of beef on hooks. John wins the Quickfire and gets immunity.

In the Elimination Challenge, the chefs travel back in time when they’re tasked with re-creating an original 1950s menu from Canlis. In the kitchen, the chefs serve up the best representation of the classics in order to stay in the competition.

At the judges table, Emeril Lagasse and Hugh Acheson join head judge Tom Colicchio and Padma to select Kristen as the winner for her side dishes: mushrooms and onions and gets $10,000. In the bottom four are Carla, CJ, Josh and Chrissy. Ultimately, Carla and Chrissy are sent packing in the double elimination.
