The Voice Recap: The Top 6 Get Their Kicks

December 03, 2012 11:09 PM by Shayla Perry

Tonight on NBC‘s The Voice, each of the remaining 6 artists performed not once, but twice; one song that they chose, and another chosen by their coach. So…double the disappointment for Christina Aguilera, who doesn’t have anyone left in the competition. (Sorry Xtina…and Dez Duron!) She’s lovin’ the opportunity to just sit back and enjoy the show as a viewer, like us. And the artist she’s rooting for? Cassadee Pope! But which singer has Christina breathless after their amazing performance? All the highlights after the jump.

This week, Cee Lo Green was a bit under the weather, so he had his good friend, Pat Monahan, from Train step in to help his artists prepare for their performances.

First up, Nicholas David took everyone back to “September”…September of 1970-something. It’s a more upbeat performance than we’re used to seeing from the soulful crooner, but definitely not his best…or second best.

Cassadee Pope went back to what she does best — country music. She took on “Stand,” but put just a little bit of pop-rock to it. Again, it’s another performance lacking in the sheer awesomeness that we’ve seen in recent weeks; especially from Cassadee, who’s consistently charted on iTunes since wowing us all with “Over You,” but it was still solid; and enough to get her a standing ovation from coach Blake Shelton and self-proclaimed “co-coach,” Christina Aguilera. (Hey, she needs something to do!)

Adam Levine’s Amanda Brown opted for less rock this time with Aretha Franklin’s “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman.” Sooo happy that she’s back to doing songs that more people are familiar with, and sooo in love with this performance. Girl power!

Scottish rocker, Terry McDermott did a pretty familiar song, too — “I Want to Know What Love Is.” But to change things up a bit, Blake and Terry decide to drop most of the instruments and really strip the song down to highlight his voice. You know, so we can really hear how amazing he is. And he is amazing.

Trevin Hunte went up tempo again this week with “Walkin’ On Sunshine.” We love seeing Trevin smile and have fun on these faster songs, but we still prefer the slower ones. Okay…make that “preferred” the slower ones — past tense — because it was great seeing him do a little dancing in this performance. We’d hate to see him go home after that one.

Breaking out the black and blue hair this time, Melanie Martinez pays homage to the magnificent Cee Lo Green with her version of his hit, “Crazy.” There were some pitch problems, but even with the imperfections, the rendition was pretty sweet. We smell another iTunes hit!

Terry McDermott hit the stage again with “Stay With Me,” followed by Trevin, who blew everyone away with “And I Am Telling You.” Seriously, this guy has no reason to have confidence issues EVER again in life. And he doesn’t have to worry about a job after this either — because he’s so good that an awestruck Christina extends an offer to take him out on the road with her if for some unexplained reason he doesn’t get a record deal.

Back to the rock — Amanda Brown does White Snake’s “Here I Go Again.” Yup, it’s official…she can do EVERY kind of song out there — and do it well.

For Melanie’s second performance, Adam chose “The Show,” for her. Perfect song choice; even if Blake didn’t get it and Christina (as always) wasn’t exactly feeling it. Kudos to Adam, and major props to the…um– props people for the…er– major props.

Christina’s fave, Cassadee Pope, brought the house down with some Avril Lavigne. Then, Nicholas David closed the show with a surprise song choice, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
