Blake Shelton dearly loves Christmas and this year, he has taken celebrating the holiday season to a whole new level. What’s he up to? The Voice judge teamed with NBC for a holiday special called “Not So Family Christmas,” which aired on Monday December 3.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shelton said his original intent for the Christmas special was simply to sing songs from his new country Christmas album, “Cheers, It’s Christmas.” But things took an unexpected turn as comedy was interjected into the special. “When we originally decided to do this, it was just going to be all music, like a concert,” Shelton says. “And then as we started talking to NBC more about it, it’s like, I’ve kind of become this guy on The Voice that’s always cutting up, so it’s like you’ve got to do something funny, some kind of a skit.” He added, “And the more we got into it, it started becoming this other thing, which I’m glad about. Because I’m not an actor and I’m not somebody that’s trying to be in movies or anything, but I do like to act like an idiot. And to do skits just seems like it comes natural to me, because I don’t take myself seriously and I’m not afraid to look like an idiot when I can.” He boasted. And the rest is history.
The Not So Family Christmas special is chock full of funny and includes a little bit of everything. Such as, Shelton being dressed as an elf singing “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” which ends bad when he gets beat up by little people, also dressed as elves, a Christmas turkey, and Santa, to jabs at the audience, a sing off with Kelly Clarkson, and a claymation skit. What’s claymation? It’s an animated version of Shelton and Larry the cable Guy on a hunting trip where they shoot Frosty, Rudolph, and other loveable Christmas characters. Now that’s a new way to ring in the holiday season!
