The winning chef will receive $125,000 furnished by Healthy Choice, a feature in Food & Wine magazine, a showcase at the Annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and will earn the title of “Top Chef.”
The 14 cheftestants are in Seattle and visit the famous Pike Place Market. It takes a mix of personality, knowledge and skills to win the coveted title of Top Chef and everyone is eyeing it up!
The contestants are Lizzie Binder from Napa; Micah Fields from Los Angeles; John Tesar from Dallas; Joshua Valentine from Oklahoma City; Kristen Kish from Boston; Eliza Gavin from Telluride; Tyler Wiard from Denver; Brooke Williamson from Los Angeles; Danyele McPherson from Dallas; Sheldon Simeon from Hawaii; Josie Smith-Malave from Miami; Stefan Richter from Finland; Cris “CJ” Jacobsen from Studio City; and Bart Vandaele from Washington D.C.
This week, the chefs join host Padma Lakshmi and visit the famous Pike’s Place Market. For the Quickfire, the chefs pair-off and make breakfast to go on a stick for the workers in the market. Guest judge Daisley Gordon selects Sheldon and Bart and the winners of the challenge. Both have immunity heading into the Elimination Challenge.
The Pike Place Market is filled with many rare ingredients. In the Elimination Challenge, the chefs must use their skills and imagination to highlight the ingredient they’re given and impress the artisans. Some of the interesting ingredients are salmon candy, truffle popcorn, rose petal jelly, spicy dill pickles and coconut curry chocolate!
At the judges table, Gail Simmons and Hugh Acheson join head judge Tom Colicchio, Padma and the artisans who made the rare ingredients. In a shocking critics table, Tom makes it known that he’s immensely disappointed with the food. He pays a visit to the chefs after the meal and tells them that there was a lack of imagination and lack of technique; plus he takes the $10,000 prize off the table. When the chefs face the judges, they’re told an entire team will go home. The teams in the bottom are Stefan and Brooke; John and Joshua; and Tyler and CJ. Ultimately, CJ and Tyler are eliminated for their burger and spicy dill pickles.
