On tonight’s episode of Project Runway All Stars, the seven remaining designers faced the dreaded unconventional challenge. And to top it off, it was a prize challenge. Who won this week’s challenge and took the prize? Who went home? Keep reading to get all the details.
At the beginning of tonight’s episode, the designers met Carolyn at South Street Harbor where she introduced them to international jeweler to the stars, Fawaz Gruosi.
Then she explained this week’s challenge. It was the dreaded unconventional challenge. The designers were told they had to go to a store at pier 17 but they weren’t told the name of the store. They would have a budget of $350 and 30 minutes to shop. After which they would have to create an amazing design using only materials found in that store. Sounds halfway simple, right? Not so fast! There was a twist – when the design was complete, no one should be able to tell the materials came from this store.
In addition, a prize was up for grabs for the winning designer, a Fawaz Gruosi watch!
The designers headed out to pier 17 where they shopped for materials at Christmas in New York. Imagine that, the designers had to purchase Christmas items to design their garment but their finished garment could not resemble Christmas.
When the designers returned to the workroom, Joshua was in for a big surprise. He thought he had bought a beautiful roll of shiny blue fabric but upon opening it, he found the shiny blue fabric was nothing more than a bag that held a whimsical menorah against a white backdrop. Oops…
Most of the designers struggled in one way or another with their garment. At the end of the day, they went back to the hotel and talked smack. The girls said they were shocked with Emilio’s choices. Joshua told Emilio to go around the workroom the next day and ask for leftovers. He reminded Emilio that this was an unconventional challenge and he couldn’t just use fabric in his design.
The next day, the designers had two hours to finish their designs before hitting the runway. They were all rushing to get the garments completed. Emilio glued recycled ribbon on his dress and Ivy had more areas on her dress that she wanted to fill in but there just wasn’t enough time. Joshua didn’t have much fabric so he used ribbon to make a bottom for his look but it gave him a good bit of trouble and Emilio continued to glue, glue, and glue. They all worked until the last minute and then it was runway time.
After the models walked, Carolyn called Casanova, Ivy, and Emilio and said one of them was safe. And it was a very surprised Emilio.
Carolyn then told the remaining six designers that one of them had the high score and one had the low score. Then the judges critiqued the designs.
Anthony Ryan was up first. He said he was going for a stage dress. Isaac said he loved the color and that the garment looked expensive like it could come down a Paris runway. Georgina said she liked the pauses he took with the embellishments. “It gives a sense of relief and cleanliness,” she said.
Guest judge and singer, Kylie Minogue said the dress could definitely be seen from the rafters at a performance. And guest judge, LaLa Anthony said some of the design “reads Christmas.”
Kylie said her favorite part of Laura Kathleen’s design was the pockets and that the droplets looked big and a bit thrown on. LaLa loved the design and Carolyn said she loved the shape in the back because it made the dress look fresh. But Isaac wasn’t buying it so much. He said he had major criticism. “I think she [the model] looks fat and that is not a fat girl,” he said. “The cut and embellishments make her look thick through the middle,” he added.
Casanova had gone through three designs and used leftovers from the other designers to complete his garment. Georgina said she like the design even more knowing the situation. She said she could tell he had made the best of a bad situation but the dress looks a little heavy and the “bust feels high.”
Isaac told Casanova he should consider the age of the end user because this “goes very old lady,” he said.
For Joshua’s two-piece bra/shorts ensemble, Isaac said he wanted to both congratulate him and give him a slap on the wrist. He said he could see inside the shorts as the model walked the runway. “It doesn’t work to show your privates on the runway,” Isaac said.
Georgina said she loved the breast piece but wasn’t sure if the shorts were staying on or coming off as the model walked the runway. Kylie said she was crazy about the top and wished he had more of that “hotness” in the shorts.
Georgina said she liked the idea behind Ivy’s design. It looked like a 60’s woman, she said, but the proportions bothered her. “The keyhole and seams look boxy,” she noted.
And finally, Isaac told Uli she had a signature design and her mix was like magic. Kylie said the dress was “absolutely stunning” and Carolyn loved the sneak peek on the side. Georgina said it was a smart use of silver and gold but there should not be a seam running through the see through sides of the garment.
The designers were dismissed from the runway so the judges could make their final decision and then the designers were called back to get the verdict.
Carolyn told Laura Kathleen she was safe. Then she called Uli and Anthony Ryan. “One of you is the winner,” she said.
She declared Uli the winner of the challenge and told Anthony Ryan he was safe. Back in the lounge, Fawaz Gruosi presented Uli with her prize watch.
Then it was down to Casanova, Ivy, and Joshua. “Joshua, you are safe,” Carolyn said.
Now we’re down to two. Carolyn told Ivy she played it too safe. She told Casanova he really impressed the judges with his braiding and his ability to make something out of nothing.
“Ivy, you are in. Casanova, you are out,” Carolyn said.
