American Idol guest star, Randy Travis appeared in court on Friday in connection with his August 23 arrest in Plano, Texas for simple assault. The country music star entered a plea of not guilty and requested a jury trial. Keep reading for more details.
According to E! News, Travis was arrested and charged with simple assault on August 23 following an altercation with a man outside a church in Plano, Texas. As it turned out, the man was the estranged husband of Travis’ fiancé. When the argument between the two became too heated, Travis stepped in and that’s when he allegedly assaulted the man.
At the time of the incident, Travis’s attorney Larry Friedman claimed the singer “came to the rescue” of his fiancé but was not responsible for the scuffle. However, according to Contact Music, Friedman has now changed his account and is calling Travis a “good Samaritan” who was defending a woman and her daughter against two men. “He intervened in an assault by two men who were beating two women, one of whom was a minor.” Friedman explained, “When he intervened, one of those two attackers attacked Randy, and he defended himself.”
Friedman went on to say Travis has turned over a new leaf. “Randy is doing great. Life is good. He’s given up drinking alcohol. He’s drinking eight glasses of water a day or more. He’s on a strict exercise regimen…He’s in the best shape he’s ever been in his life.”
While we’re not certain of the truth regarding the claims surrounding the assault, we do know Travis is scheduled to appear in court for a jury trial on March 11.
Do you think Travis is guilty of assault? Was he trying to protect his fiancé? Was it a case of self-defense? Or was he too drunk to remember? And is he going to be able to stay sober? Or do you think he’s going to fall off the wagon again? Post a comment and let us know what you think.
