Mariah Carey will be heading to our television screens soon, when the new season of American Idol premieres this month. Many fans are excited to have such a successful artist on the judging panel, but is Mariah responsible for her own success? Not according to Carey’s ex-husband, who claims that he is the one who is actually responsible for her mega success.
Just as powerhouse singer Mariah Carey is gearing up for her American Idol debut, her ex-husband has now come out of the woodwork with some claims to her fame. According to The New York Post, Carey’s ex-husband, Tommy Mottola has written a new book, in which he claims he is responsible for Mariah’s success.
Mottola, who married Carey in 1993, was often referred to as controlling, and after their divorce in 1997, Mariah admitted that he was emotionally abusive to her. But according to Mottola, it was all for her own good. In his new memoir, Mottola wrote: “If it seemed I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success.”
Mottola also recalls how he felt when he first heard the then 18-year-old Mariah Carey sing, claiming that he thought to himself: “That may be the best voice you’ve ever heard in your life!” At that point, Carey had already been given a record offer, but Mottola upped the ante, and the rest is history.
Mariah Carey is now happily married to America’s Got Talent host, Nick Cannon. The couple also have 18-month-old twins.
