Dance Moms Recap: Return Of The Dream Team

January 16, 2013 12:44 AM by Stephanie Gustafson

Team Awesome is returning tonight on Dance Moms! Apparently the girls aren’t so replaceable after all. But the big question now is, how will the girls fare now that Abby Lee Miller has found a new Maddie?

At the end of last week’s episode, the moms realized that their girls just might need a dance teacher after all. I maintain that there’s perfectly good dance teachers preparing professionals and winning competitions outside of the Abby Lee Dance Company, but going anywhere other than Candy Apples might mean leaving the show…and we wouldn’t want that now, would we?

Well, actually, at least one mom has decided that leaving the show is the better option. Or perhaps the producers have decided it for her, I don’t know. Abby calls Shelley to find out why Ally is not in practice, only to find out that the two are now back in New Orleans. Apparently, the new moms had accused Ally of making the rest of the team lose the last competition. Abby’s pissed off at losing one of her best new dancers, so in an odd turn of events, she kicks off two of the other dancers. The poor girls are bawling, but hey, when Abby wants to teach the moms a lesson, it’s ultimately the girls who suffer.

After standing in the parking lot for ages, the “old moms” decide to crawl back to Abby. They’re forced to sign a brand new, extremely strict contract, which includes having the moms perform chores around the studio. They also have to sit back silently as Abby puts all the kids (besides Sophia) on probation. Christi remarks later on the fact that Chloe won a national championship and that Abby’s replacing her with “this girl off the street.” Except that Sophia’s not just some girl off the street — she’s performed on Ellen DeGeneres and she’s set a record for the most pirouettes. Granted, she was in tap shoes and even a mediocre dancer can hit a ton of turns in tap shoes, but still….world record.

The moms aren’t too happy about new mom Jackie and let’s just say, they’re eager to get Jackie and Sophia packing their bags and leaving the studio. Christi suggests putting E6000 in Jackie’s eyelash glue, a suggestion that horrifies Kelly. Jackie does eventually end up bonding a bit with the moms over their mutual disgust for Abby, but Abby breaks up this newfound camaraderie up by sending Gianna over to tell the moms to shut up.

Abby further bothers the mothers by calling them down to watch their kids audition for the group number. She complains that there’s too many kids…despite the fact that most dance lines consist of a minimum of 12 dancers. I’ve long been on to Abby’s secret — it’s easy to clean a dance with only four or five girls.  And when you’re teaching kids a new dance each week, you need to be able to have the dance looking clean on a minimum amount of rehearsal time.

Everyone heads to Ohio for the in10sity dance competition…aka the competition milking the Dance Moms angle hardcore. Abby’s really only paying attention to Sophia, for Sophia marks her best chance at coming away with the high point award. Chloe dances directly after Sophia, and while her turns are clearly not as good as Sophia’s, Chloe definitely does a better job of connecting the movements and transitioning from one trick to the next.

Finally, it’s time for the group dance. It involves red carpet as a prop, and before the dance even begins, there’s quite the mishap with the carpet. The number is not nearly as enjoyable as past dances, for not only is the choreography a bit slapdash, none of the girls really look like they’re having fun. The moms worry that the dance will even place.

Time for awards! Sophia takes first overall, predictably, and Chloe comes in third. But Chloe also receives a special award for having performed the most heartwarming dance. And she definitely deserved it! The group dance takes first place, but Abby was not impressed with the number. And she thinks Chloe looked “awful.” The episode ends with the moms in tears, but, based on the preview for next week, it looks like they’re sticking around for now.

Signing that contract to be in “Miss”(?) Abby’s dance company is signing a pact with the devil. Why are these moms so surprised at her actions and words. She is a horrible human being and it’s no wonder why she is alone in life. If you have any sense of pride and responsibility as a mother, take your child or children out of her studio and run. Run fast and run far. What are you teaching your kids. That, as long as you win at the end, it’s ok to abuse children? Really. Great show Lifetime. You just lost at least 1 viewer.

Sophia is not a product of Abbey –Christi was right to point that out—this little girl does it all on her own and learned most of what she knows from another teacher and her mother—Abbey has nothing to do with Sophia’s talent—-Chloe is by far a more beautiful dancer and Maddie is also—so grow up Abbey and get a life—try and be fair to everyone which I believe might be impossible for you—it my opinion you are an overgrown BABY!!!

I absolutely love Abby! How she handles those girls is fantastic. They have mothers that are always making excuses for every little thing. The girls need to be shown that if they want to dance professionally that the ‘big world’ does not allow wimps. It is a ‘dog eat dog’ world out there and competition is fierce. Better learn it now and get used to fierce criticism which is constructive. Granted Abby could be a tad gentler but I still find she is extremely constructive in her corrections. The girls need that. You can see Chloe and Maddie have come back not up to par for them. Get busy girls – you can do it. Jill – remember you did not fit in until the end either. Kendal is good but not as good as you make her out to be.
