Tonight’s the night! American Idol season 12 premieres on FOX! Will we finally get to see Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey feuding? Minaj appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on January 15 and opened up about her new gig on Idol and the feud between her and fellow judge and diva, Mariah Carey. Keep reading to see what Nicki had to say.
According to NBC, Minaj spoke with Ellen about her new gig on American Idol and admitted she doesn’t like the hours. “I’m not used to having to stay in one place for such a long time,” she said. “Even when you do a show, you’re on stage for an hour and a half and you meet your fans for a half hour and that’s it.” She added, “But with this, its 8 hours, 9 hours, 10 hour days sometimes…it’s very, very strenuous.”
Then Ellen brought up the bickering between her and fellow judge, Mariah Carey. “What happened there?” Ellen asked.
“I don’t know,” Minaj said. “It was just two big ole divas, I guess. I was, like, just sitting there and I guess before I went in there, I heard all this stuff that was being said, but I didn’t believe it,” she explains. “I heard them saying, like, ‘Mariah doesn’t want you on the panel.’ But I was saying, ‘No, I’m friends with Mariah.’ I was arguing people down. Like, ‘Don’t believe everything you read! You’re crazy.’ So I went there, and I started feeling a little bit of ‘the shade.’ And I just kind of overcompensated by being crazier.”
“If you know someone maybe doesn’t like you, it’s kind of like now you’re going to really go in… It’s like a defense mechanism,” she continues. “It’s really that your feelings are hurt and you can’t believe it so you kind of just compensate by being crazy.”
But Minaj says she and Mariah are fine now. “I cannot hold a grudge against Mariah Carey,” she said. “I’ve looked up to her for so many years…I don’t know if she’s gotten over it but I have. If she’s still holding a grudge, I don’t know. I don’t care.”
As for the live shows, Minaj said, “I’m not looking forward to live shows because I cannot trust myself.” She explained, “If there’s a comment being made…I just want it to go well. It’s about the contestants. We’ve got a lot of great talent and I don’t want anyone on the panel to say something crazy because then I don’t want to look like a crazy psycho, again. I am really not a crazy psycho.”
