Inauguration 2013: White House Removes ‘Beyonce To Be Disinvited’ Petition

January 21, 2013 08:34 AM by Donna W. Martin

American Idol guest star, Beyonce Knowles is scheduled to sing the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration ceremony. However, some people don’t believe she should and a petition was started on We The People to try to prevent it. Why? Keep reading to find out!

According to Forbes, a petition was started on We The People by Laurie David, an environmental activist and author of “The Family Dinner,” calling for Beyonce to be disinvited to sing the National Anthem at Obama’s inauguration. The petition received more than 500 signatures in just three days, then, the White House pulled the plug and removed the petition on January 17.

So why did Laurie David initiate the petition? The petition was started because Beyonce signed a $50 million deal with Pepsi. David believes Beyonce’s deal with Pepsi is in direct conflict with her work on Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, which encourages kids to eat healthy and exercise.

And others wholeheartedly agree with David. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has asked Beyonce to reconsider her partnership with Pepsi saying, “You occupy a unique position in the cultural life of this country and are an inspiring role model for millions of young people. Your image is one of success, health, talent, fitness, and glamour. But by lending your name and image to PepsiCo, you are associating those positive attributes with a product that is quite literally sickening Americans.”

New York Times oped columnist added, “Knowles is renting her image to a product that may one day be ranked with cigarettes as a killer we were too slow to rein in. From saying, as she once did in referring to Let’s Move, that she was “excited to be part of this effort that addresses a public health crisis,” she’s become part of an effort that promotes a public health crisis.”

So why did the White House remove the petition? A spokesperson for the White House said Beyonce’s performance “is not something the White House actually has jurisdiction over. Selecting performers is a function of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, not the White House. We the People’s terms of participation state that users cannot post petitions that do not address the current or potential actions or policies of the federal government.”

What do you think of the petition to disinvite Beyonce to sing the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration ceremony? And do you think her deal with Pepsi compromises her work with “Let’s Move?” Post a comment and let us know.
