Beyonce’s fans aren’t too happy with their favorite diva now that she’s rumored to have lip synced her stunning rendition of the National Anthem. American Idol alums Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have already come to the diva’s defense, but now, Beyonce is also receiving kind words from the Queen of Soul herself — Aretha Franklin!
When it comes to matters of music and performing, we always trust Aretha Franklin’s judgement. After all, she did earn the title “Queen of Soul” for a reason! And what better source of information to turn to during a music scandal of epic proportions?
Aretha Franklin doesn’t understand why the Beyonce backlash has been so strong in the wake of the singer’s pre-recorded and lip-synced inauguration performance. She told ABC News, “When I heard the news this evening that [Beyonce] was pre-recorded I really laughed. I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather. When I heard that I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny.”
Aretha knows what she’s talking about, having been invited to sing My Country ‘Tis Of Thee for President Obama’s first inauguration in 2009. Although she says that her 2009 performance was live, she understands Beyonce’s decision. “Having come face to face with 28, 22 degrees I am not surprised she pre-recorded. She wanted her performance to be what she wanted to be and she realized it wasn’t going to be the way she wanted it to be or she was going to be running a risk. That’s probably why she pre-recorded exactly how she wanted it to be heard.”
And as for the quality of the pre-record, well, let’s just say that Aretha was a fan. In fact, she might take a page out of Beyonce’s book the next time she’s forced to perform in a colder climate. “[Beyonce] did a beautiful job with the pre-record….next time I’ll probably do the same.”
