Beyonce Backlash: Will Lip-Sync Controversy Tarnish Her Image?

January 23, 2013 01:22 PM by Donna W. Martin

American Idol guest star, Beyonce is getting negative publicity, again! After signing a deal with Pepsi, a petition was started on We The People and garnered more than 500,000 signatures calling for the pop superstar to be ‘disinvited’ from singing the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration. The White House later removed the petition and Beyonce was allowed to perform. But now, she’s getting slammed for allegedly lip-syncing during her performance. Will the backlash from the lip-sync controversy tarnish her image?

While we cannot be certain if Beyonce did in fact lip-sync the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration ceremony, we have to wonder if the negative publicity will tarnish her image. And according to Forbes, the answer is no. Through the years, many big name acts including Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Britney Spears have endured lip-syncing controversy and their images were not hurt by it in the long run.

In fact, lip-syncing is a commonplace musical practice and may occur more often than we’d like to think. LeAnn Rimes spoke out in Beyonce’s defense. “I’m actually taking up for her on this one,” LeAnn said, according to E! News. “There are times when people will ask you to do it, and they will not let you [sing] unless you [agree to lip-sync] because they want control over what happens,” she said.

Jennifer Lopez agreed saying, “In certain venues and stuff, they do prerecord things, because you’re going to have that terrible slapback.” She added, “All performers have to do it at some point…just ideally, not on such a massive stage.”

Voice instructor, Ilana Martin “estimates that 25% of performers use something called a ‘magic mic’” when they perform. The mic produces a hybrid of live and prerecorded sounds, which allows the prerecorded sound to fade in and out as the volume of notes sung into the microphone changes. Martin explains, “You pre-record, sing some notes, the engineer mutes some, and it’s literally a mixture of you and your recording. The same way auto-fill fills in a sentence or spell-check corrects your spelling, this corrects your singing.”

Martin added it’s likely that Beyonce used a similar device during her National Anthem performance. And as far as her image, “I don’t think anything can hurt the Beyonce brand. It’s kind of like the McDonald’s brand–it’s too good to be hurt by one incident.”

What did you think of Beyonce’s inauguration performance? Do you think she lip-synced the National Anthem? Or did she use a device similar to the magic mic? Will the controversy surrounding her performance hurt her image? Sound off in the comments section and let us know what you think.

It would of been something to blog about if Beyonce herself admitted she did lip sing the National Anthem and messed up on the words while lip singing. Who’s to say she didn’t have a sore throat still wanted to sing for the inauguration…it’s flu/cold season even for the biggest of stars. How many songers have liped song during a sold out consert? Either way Beyonce sounded good lip singing or not.

Beyonce did a spectacular job singing the Star Spangled Banner at President Obama’s inauguration. I don’t think it matters one bit whether she prerecorded and was lip-syncing. It was beautiful to watch and hear such a talented singer perform our national anthem flawlessly and with class and poise. The End. Why must people search for ANY negative aspect of what was a totally wonderful performance and attempt to turn something beautiful into something else. Stop searching for the negative and start looking for the Silver Lining – you are missing out on the beautiful things in life and trying to drag others into your negative view.

Sometimes, a performance may have to be pre-recorded to accommodate a specific venue. This is not at all unusual. It has been done before by many top recording artists and it’s not a big deal. As a recording artist myself, I had to do it on many occasions. Such a practice does not affect the artist’s performance in any way and does not usually happen at the request of the artist. It’s basically part of the business. There’s no need to scold Beyoncé. A mon avis, she did a great job.

Oh for crying in the bucket. We’ve never had a great singer here. We have a lovely young woman a fabulous dancer and a good recording artist. First of all, recorded or not Ban-ner is TWO notes. That’s the tell that separates the pros from the others. Second, I believe she feared “Hearing” her first starting note which can send everything haywire if missed. The true shame was having a fine group of legitimate musicians miss out on the honor and pleasure of a once in a lifetime performance duty for the re-elected President Of The United States. Honestly I felt that her sing had improved some since marriage as her husband is a consummate business man and very savvy producer. I thought finally, some lessons on voice, breathing and technique. No fair, She’s a good girl who deserves better..and so did the band.

I think it was very deceiving and she should have sang live. It was cowardly. Now, when I see the news footage of her singing…maybe she is best suited for an Academy Award for “Best Actress in a fictional musical”. What’s the deal with her removing the ear piece anyway during her performance? Was someone whispering in her ear that her lip movement was not with the words and it was distracting her so she removed the ear piece???? lol lol lol! She should have sang live and be woman enough to face it. Now just like no audible live voice then…she is speechless and not saying a word and hiding in silence. She should have sang live like the others did for such an important event. I see her as fake now and she has lost my respect. End of point.

The real deal is this: Some people can sing and some cannot. Some will try to fake it, and some will not. Millie Vanelli tried it and was exposed. One of their members killed himself from the shame he felt. People who can sing can do it without musical accompaniment. They can do it accapella in studio or out. There are only few people who can carry the high notes of the national anthem. Maybe she should have told the people how she intends to perform it. The way it was done was grossly deceptive. It is the cover-up of the concert and the lies which cast a bad cloud over her image. Those who depend on instruments to make them sound good should not call themselves singers. THIS IS DECEPTION PLAIN AND SIMPLE. NO EXCUSES!

This article is so Stupid. The Media is going too far with this. How exactly will this Tarnish her image if she did not sing live? Everyone knows Beyonce can sing. So wth is the big deal? Only in America are we always looking to put someone down. The media is fueling this crap. Please Media STOP! There is so much more going on in this world other than trying to figure out if Beyonce sang live or not. Please get a life people.

Please explain how this will tarnish her image? It’s not like she can’t singe. The media really needs to stop fueling this mess. Does it truly matter whether she lip-synched or not? She did a wonderful job regardless. Those who are spending every waking moment trying to discredit Beyonce, please get a life.

Haters – you crack me up. This is a woman with a multi-million dollar career. Singing full voice in cold weather can often be tough on the vocal chords. Keep in mind, she is contracted for other work and needs to remain in good vocal health because people are spending good money to see her perform. She worked from her own vocal track. Bands and artists on live tv shows do it all the time. SO WHAT! Unable to find too much to complain about, this is/was a non-issue used by Fox and affiliates to distract those who are easily distracted, from the main focus of the inauguration. Don’t you get it? Grow up and get over it and PLEASE get a clue. You want to complain about something? Ask congress why the Sandy hurricane victims are now victims of the system because they won’t approve the funding. FOCUS on the IMPORTANT things folks!

The Star Spangled Banner is NOT an easy song to sing – issue #1.
Issue #2- A human voice may or may not respond when subject to weather conditions or perhaps she had a throat issue that morning to begin with.
Issue #3- One would certainly NOT WANT TO SCREW UP

I enjoyed the inauguration and all of its performers. Beyonce can sing and that’s the end of the story. Vilifying her is sad; she is a lovely, classy young lady who deserves to bask in her success. Thank you for a job well done. Look forward to seeing you at the superbowl.

She’s a great performer! If she did lip-sync it was probably to avoid any kind of possible embarrassing vocal incident which would have spoiled this solemn occasion.
Bad publicity for the US as all the world was watching. I am sure if any incident had happened then people would have been screaming “Why did she not lip-sync?”

She is only human and she is not perfect but this internet and media makes people and things look worse than what they really are. The foolishness are not going to keep her down it actually makes her stronger in what she do and when she do it she is good at it. If she did lip sync old well it were still her voice recorded. Not one time do people sit back and think before they put things out where are the love ones of these people we are here and believe me it doesn’t feel good to see ur people be talk down about on their talent. Get a life and leave hers along at the end of the day she is doing who??? “BEYONCE” THANKS!!!!!!!!

The shame is the band was not able to play live, this was not all about beyance she is fake all the time she does not sing at all the shows she plays at. People pay so much money to see her and are given recorded music!!!that is the shame.
