Dance Moms Recap: Making Lemons From Lemonade

January 23, 2013 12:41 AM by Stephanie Gustafson

Sophia Lucia appears in another episode of Dance Moms this week! And it looks like the pressure of having a new Maddie is really getting to the real Maddie. Not to mention the moms. How will they handle Sophia’s presence on the top of the pyramid?

Watch out world, for the pyramid of doom has returned! This week, Sophia Lucia takes Maddie’s usual place at the tippy tippy top of the stack. Melissa looks devastated, but says that she realizes now how the other moms felt when their daughters were constantly compared to Maddie. Somehow, I don’t think that this new-found empathy will last long should Sophia ditch the team.

This week, Chloe, Paige and Mackenzie get solos, Kendall and Maddie get a duet and the rest (minus Brooke) are in a group dance. And the moms get cleaning duty in Abby’s garage! Things go just dandy until Holly discovers a dead mouse, flips out and runs away. Oh, and Christi discovers a record of Kelly going on probation for foul language back in 1979. As she says, some things never change.

The group dance is supposed to be about immigration, but we all know that it symbolizes the return of the girls to Abby’s not-so safe haven. There’s no Sophia at the moment, as she’s off in Cali shooting a movie. If this was anyone else, Abby would be freaking out, but Sophia is the new golden girl, so she’ll get away with it for now.

More drama from the mamas: Melissa gets caught red-handed admitting that she’s not happy about Maddie’s “downgrade” to dancing a duet with Kendall. Abby tells Jill about Melissa’s disappointment, but when Jill confronts Melissa, she’s told that Abby was lying. The moms know that, no matter how obnoxious she is, Abby’s not a liar….and Melissa has a bit of a history of saying one thing and doing something else.

On the bus to the Dance Troupe Challenge in Greensboro, Abby learns that Sophia will not be showing up for the competition. Kelly’s pissed about this, seeing as Brooke’s been around all week and she didn’t get a spot in the dance….but Sophia ditched all week and her spot was still reserved.

Solo time! Mackenzie’s makin’ lemonade for her solo this week. She has a huge batch of lemons on her head and I’m really hoping none of them fall off. The poor girl already was ratted out for losing a hairpiece. But the dance is great (albeit, the exact same mix of cute and acro included in every Mackenzie number) and she easily takes first. Paige looks good for the most part, but she does have a habit of forgetting the little details (such as hand placement) that could take her to the next level. But Abby says she looks fabulous.

The drama between Jill and Melissa continues, with Jill deciding to critique Maddie’s dancing…cause she knows soooo much about dance, right? There is a really sweet moment right before they dance though, when Maddie tells Kendall to get everything Abby said out of her head and just dance because, according to Maddie, Kendall’s amazing. Awww. How in the world did these girls end up to be such lovely people? Is this the sort of thing that just skips a generation?

The lemonade solo was Mackenzie, not Maddie. Just a heads up for a correction. :)

why do the moms stay week after week and put up with Abby’s crap. Surely she is not THAT great and there has to be a studio that doesn’t down grade children. Shame Abby!!! God don’t like ugly. I watch this show ONLY to see these beautiful dancers. Very talented … and they would be regardless of WHERE they took dance from.

Dance Moms: is a reality show and money worth the destruction of your children’? Shame on you and shame on Abby. Greed, greed. These kids are beautiful, but their turns are not high on Demi pointe, the feet aren’t really great and the choreography is same dance different music. These kids deserve much more than a reality show bent on destroying them.
