The American Idol auditions continue despite Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj’s feud in Charlotte. Ryan Seacrest and the judges are in Randy Jackson‘s hometown of Baton Rouge, and it just so happens that the contestants there are in it to win it! Keep reading for the highlights!
Charlie Askew, a socially awkward teen, sings Queen’s “Breakthrough” and Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy” for the judges. I honestly cannot decide if I enjoy Charlie’s voice, but the judges love him. Keith Urban says, “Dude, I love your voice. The tone is not of a gender, and I mean that in a glowingly, complimentary way, like Bowie. It’s your own thing.” Charlie gets four yeses and a ticket to Hollywood.
Randy Jackson invites Maddie Assel to audition for American Idol because her spunky grandma said so! She sings “Oh! Darling” by The Beatles. Maddie growls and reminds me of Haley Reinhart from season 10. Mariah compliments her song choice, voice, and confidence. Keith likes her unusual sound. Maddie is going to Hollywood. Spunky grandma tells Ryan Seacrest that she wants to take him home with her. Don’t we all?
Megan Miller, the current Miss Baton Rouge, auditions despite needing emergency surgery on her leg. She says, “I will let it fall off before I miss my American Idol audition.” On crutches (in heels) and determined, Megan sings “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” by Etta James. I hope it’s not just the pain meds singing because she sounds amazing. The judges say she’s an undeniable superstar. Keith jokes, “I wish you had danced around a bit more but that’s fine.” Megan easily advances to Hollywood.
Paul Jolley sings “I Won’t Let Go” by Rascal Flatts. Nicki says she likes him, adding, “You have not only a nice texture to your tone but also this clear ability to play with it and make it real colorful. I like your vibe and the sparkle in your eye.” Paul gets four yeses and a ticket to Hollywood.
Chris Barthel and his unnamed alter ego bring the crazy. In a single breath, he’s like, “Alter ego sounds crazy, but I’m crazy, but who knows. What’s your sign?” Nicki names his alter ego Mushroom. After Mushroom butchers Adam Lambert‘s “If I Had You,” Keith tells him he’s a
fun guy fungi but not a singer. Mariah nearly vomits when Nicki runs her fingers through Mushroom’s hair. Randy politely sends Chris home, saying, “Thank you very much-room.”
Dr. Calvin Peters, a third-year resident practicing physical medicine and rehabilitation, recently rediscovered his passion for singing. Calvin sings Maxwell’s “Whenever Wherever Whatever” and impresses the judges. Personally, falsetto makes me cringe, so I’m not a fan. Keith gives him kudos for taking on Maxwell. Paging Dr. Calvin! You’re wanted in Hollywood!
Fireman Dustin Watts heats up Nicki. Once
he puts out Nicki’s fire his relationship status is established, Dustin sings “She’s Every Woman” by Garth Brooks. Keith likes his style and confidence. Dustin gets four yeses and a ticket to Hollywood.
Burnell Taylor came to appreciate his musical gift after enduring Hurricane Katrina and auditions with “I’m Here” from The Color Purple. Randy, Mariah, and Keith give him a standing ovation. Mariah is in tears, saying, “I felt every single word you sang. Spectacular.” Keith says there’s a spotlight somewhere just waiting for Burnell to walk into it. He gets four yeses and a ticket to Hollywood. After his audition, Ryan Seacrest tells Burnell, “You’ve changed that panel forever, my friend.”
The highlights for me: Maddie’s spunky grandma, Paul Jolley, Nicki didn’t talk as much, Burnell Taylor, Keith’s never-ending quick-witted humor, and Megan Miller.
There were some brilliant singers in Baton Rouge! Who stood out to you? The judges check out the talent in San Antonio, TX and Long Beach, CA next week.
