Aretha Franklin On Beyonce: Lip Syncing No Big Deal

January 24, 2013 07:14 AM by Megan Wilson

When the showdown between Beyonce and American Idol Kelly Clarkson went down at the inauguration, viewers were wondering what was going on with Beyonce when she pulled her earpiece out.  When rumors surfaced that Beyonce pre-recorded the track, many fans were miffed.  If Kelly Clarkson could sing it live, why couldn’t Beyonce?  Well Aretha Franklin thinks it’s really no big deal.

There’s no debating what Aretha Franklin says.  When it comes to vocal prowess, the icon puts every other vocalist in their place.  Aretha also sang “My Country, ‘Tis Of Thee” during Obama’s last inauguration, so she undoubtedly has experience performing at the venue.  Aretha spoke on how difficult it is to sing in the freezing weather that usually occurs during the inauguration.  “In 2009, I wanted everything to be live and on the real side for the moment as it actually happened. Those were my feelings for my performance, but having come face to face with 28, 22 degrees I am not surprised she pre-recorded.  She wanted her performance to be what she wanted to be and she realized it wasn’t going to be the way she wanted it to be or she was going to be running a risk. That’s probably why she pre-recorded exactly how she wanted it to be heard.”

Jennifer Lopez also weighed in on the pre-recorded track during an interview with Jon Stewart, saying that ALL vocalists have to lip-sync sometimes.  “You know, sometimes it happens.  When you’re in certain stadiums and in certain venues, they do pre-record things.”

Fellow American Idol panelist Steven Tyler agreed with Jennifer Lopez.  In an interview with TMZ, he said, “It doesn’t matter.  Beyonce’s so hot, she can do anything.  Let’s just get real.”

The Marine Corps band, who had rehearsed the number originally performed live, has changed it’s tune about Beyonce’s performance.  They originally said they had no idea why a track was played.  Now, however, they’re saying, “Each piece of music scheduled for performance in the Inauguration is pre-recorded for use in case of freezing temperatures, equipment failure, or extenuating circumstances.  Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter’s vocal performance, no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded.”

Do you think it was a big deal for Beyonce to lip-sync the number?  Let us know in the comments!

Of course its ok to lip synch because in reality their live voices are not to good. Machines do much of the vocals for them in some cases which I am sure is for alot of the singers of today! KELLY Clarkson has a wonderful voice live and she and we all know it!

I don’t see why it matters. If someone lip syncs and it’s to their own voice what’s the big deal. It’s not like it was someone else’s singing.

The US Marine Band should be ashamed of themselves. Get a damn life! That’s why, WE, the People don’t trust you Guys now. Big Mouth Babys! Just shut the ____ up! Kelly CLarkson should have pre-recorded her song too! To bad she didn’t!

Intention should be the basis for any opinion. I would not fault any professional who only wants perfection in an unstable situation. She did not prerecord to fool anyone, she did it so that the outcome at one of the most special public events in our society would be assured and predictable. Throughout her career she has always been known to exhibit the highest level of professionalism. I believe that was the basis for her decision.

NO i don’t think it is a big deal…leave the women alone…she is very talented…we do not know all the circumstances, especially with the extremely cold weather.

It was her voice, right? I don’t understand what the fuss is all about. It’s not like she was trying to scam anyone. Sheesh people it was cold out there!

Spoken from the Queen! Let it rest already. Unlike Milli Vanilli, we all know Beyonce can sing. She sings live whenever she can. When she wants to sound a certain way and feels she won’t be able to sound that way on a momentous occasion, then she went with a pre-recorded track of HER OWN VOCALS rather than risk sounding mediocre. It’s not a big deal.

I REALLY do not understand the discussion about whether or not we heard Beyonce sing the inaugural performance live or recorded!!! It is not as though we paid to hear her sing!! Recorded or not, it was Beyonce that we heard!! People, stop finding content for negative comments!!!

Geezus!! The media is STILL writing about this??? Wow – it is done & over with people!!! The Inauguration came, went, it’s gone, it’s a new day – let it GO already!!! Just know that whatever Beyonce did on that stage, she did a d@mn good job regardless. If she lip synched, then I guarantee you – there was a d@mn GOOD reason for it. If she didnt lip synch & she actually sang, then, as usual, she KILLED it like she always does. Beyonce is talented way above the average performer. She’s beautiful, she’s down to earth, humble, immensely talented, she’s married to an Icon, and she will always be The Baddest Chick in the Game, lip synch or not. And THIS is NOT gonna “tarnish her image” – FORGET IT PEOPLE!!!! SHE AINT GOIN’ NOWHERE – LET IT GO ALREADY!!!!

It should be noted as a dispensation and honor for Beyonce (or any other singer) to resonate at a Presidential Inauguration. With such untimely performance, I wished that someone else should have been chosen. She had her last act in the first one by signing Etta James’ “At Last” as if she had written and compose the song herself. Her singing was an atrocious job then as it was on Monday. I bet she will rehearse for the Super Bowl, in which we are boycotting her performance by not watching it all. Probably took precedence over the investiture rehearsal. This all show the viewers that she is not a natural.

Wow, they’re STILL talking about this?? Smh, geezus it is over people!!! The Inauguration came, it was beautiful, it went, its OVER!!! Beyonce is a BEAUTIFUL & IMMENSELY TALENTED YOUNG WOMAN. If she lip-synched there IS a d@mn good reason for it & if she DIDNT lip-synch then that is that, and she bought the house down whether she lip-synched or not, like she always does. And THIS is NOT going to tarnish her IMAGE.

NO BIG DEAL!! Beyonce is a professional and wanted to sound her very best for this special event. It was an honor to be singing at this event and her wanting to be perfect for the Inauguration is respectful of the honor she was given. Freezing cold temperatures aren’t exactly ideal conditions for singing. Who could blame her except idiots who don’t now any better! Get over it people!!!

What is wrong with it! No one can doubt that she is in a class by herself as a singer/performer. We can be so fickle; exuberant praise to fallen idol? Get real.
