And….the Beyonce lip-sync scandal continues. Anyone who has witnessed Beyonce on tour or as a guest star on American Idol knows that the diva clearly knows how to sing live. But for some reason, Beyonce appears to have lip-synced the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration. Now, an inauguration official is confirming the rumors, claiming that the performance did indeed involve a pre-record.
Finally, we have an answer to the question of Beyonce’s supposed lip-syncing: yes, she did use a pre-recorded version of the Star Spangled Banner. Or at least. that’s what an anonymous inauguration official recently told CNN. The source stated, “[Beyonce] did not sing live,” adding that the decision had been made on Sunday night, long before the ceremony even began.
But why would someone as amazingly talented as Beyonce feel she that needed to lip-sync the National Anthem? According to CNN’s source, it was all an issue of timing. “Because she didn’t have time to rehearse with the Marine Band, she decided to use her recording with the Marine Band…It was all Beyonce.” The official added that the pre-recording really wasn’t needed, as “She’s actually a very good live singer.”
Another current unknown in this whole fiasco is whether the actual band played live. In one statement, a Marine Corps official claimed, “The Marine Band did perform live throughout the ceremony.” But soon after, a conflicting statement was released: “ There was no opportunity for Ms. Knowles-Carter to rehearse with the Marine Band before the inauguration so it was determined that a live performance by the band was ill-advised for such a high-profile event. Each piece of music scheduled for performance in the inauguration is pre-recorded for use in case of freezing temperatures, equipment failure, or extenuating circumstances.”
It appears the scandal still has a bit of mileage before things die down. Beyonce has yet to respond to lip-syncing rumors, so we’ll just have to wait to hear what she says….or if she says anything at all.
