It’s always hilarious to see how people will believe the most unbelievable headlines. Beyonce and Obama fans alike have been freaking out over a satirical piece that claims that Republicans want President Obama to resign in response to Beyonce’s lip-syncing of the National Anthem. The jury’s still out on whether the onetime American Idol guest star used a pre-recorded track, but we’re pretty sure the issue won’t force President Obama’s resignation.
There’s some pretty silly politicians out there, but we’ve never yet heard of a member of Congress asking the country’s leader to step down in response to a lip-syncing scandal. Well, that is, until now. According to a New Yorker article by Andy Borowitz, “A rising chorus of congressional Republicans are calling on President Obama to acknowledge that the pop singer Beyoncé lip-synched during his inaugural festivities on Monday and resign from office, effective immediately.” Rand Paul is supposedly included in the ruckus, explaining, “By lip-synching the national anthem, Beyonce has cast a dark cloud over the president’s second term. The only way President Obama can remove that cloud is by resigning from office at once. We must remember that this happened on President Obama’s watch.”
Believe or not, the article quoted above is (gasp) a satire! Unfortunately, certain Twitter users failed to learn the concept of satire in high school English and seem to think that rumors of President Obama’s impending resignation are true. Shortly after the release of Andy Borowitz’s satire, the Twitterverse found itself abuzz with both tweets of alarm and tweets of relief. We’re just hoping that a few of them are satirical tweets in response to a satirical article. But that’s probably wishful thinking.
