It wasn’t some sort of silly trick for Punk’d, but as rumors have suggested, Ashton Kutcher did in fact go on an all-fruit diet. The reasoning behind the crazy diet? Ashton was imitating Steve Jobs, the technology genius he’s slated to portray in the upcoming biopic jOBS. Suffice to say, the fruit diet didn’t end well.
You’d think that Ashton Kutcher would have learned a little about healthy eating over the years, but the actor was apparently unaware of the risks involved in restricting one’s diet to a single food group. In a Friday interview at the Sundance Film Festival, Ashton revealed that he had tried Steve Jobs’ “fruitarian” diet shortly before filming for jOBS began. But strict adherence to the all-fruit diet led to what Ashton terms as some “serious issues.” He explained, “First of all, the fruitarian diet can lead to, like, severe issues. I ended up in the hospital two days before we started shooting the movie. I was doubled over in pain, and my pancreas levels were completely out of whack — which was completely terrifying, considering everything.”
The “considering everything” part of Ashton’s quote refers to the fact that Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer. But even outside of the physical complications arising from the fruit-only diet, Ashton found the role incredibly difficult, claiming that it has been “honestly one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever tried to do in my life.”
One thing that made this “terrifying” experience a bit easier? Looking to Steve Jobs as inspiration. Ashton specifically mentioned the many times the technological great failed before hitting it big again with the release of the iPod. “I think we can all sort of relate to that in some place in our life where we are moving forward with something and we fall down. You have to have the guts to get back up and go again. I think I share that as well.”
