It must be difficult coming into a franchise like the Real Housewives, which is approaching 10 seasons on the air and has seen more than 50 Housewives and friends. Somehow, Marisa Zanuck has been able to stand out on the third season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Why? She’s just as petite, just as wealthy, and just as outgoing as many other Housewives. But Marisa also brings a charming combination of sensibility, honesty, and calm that is refreshing to watch on a show that can often be heavy on melodrama and aggression. Keep reading for Marisa’s honest take on her role on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, her cast mates, and her fighting words against one of the Real Housewives of New Jersey.
RTVM: Why did you decide to come on to The Real Housewives if Beverly Hills?
Marisa Zanuck: I came on to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills because everyone I knew kept saying I would be great on the show. I guess it’s because I don’t censor myself and don’t really take personally what other people think of me, so I thought I could probably handle this.
RTVM: What do you like about The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills?
Marisa Zanuck: I like filming the show; it’s fun. My first appearance at the dinner party was like walking into the lions’ den, but I got to know the girls better and really enjoyed filming by the end. I’m also an ambitious businesswoman who loves the platform of the show.
RTVM: How do you feel about watching yourself on TV?
Marisa Zanuck: I hate it. I don’t always like the way I look on TV and I say things I shouldn’t, so I cringe and fast forward through some of my scenes.
I do regret some of the things I say—not because of public opinion (which fortunately has been pretty positive so far) but because I have my own perception looking back and I never want to hurt anyone close to me, like my husband.
RTVM: Speaking of public perception, one of the first moments we saw you on camera was in a RumorFix interview in which you said you didn’t like Teresa Guidice of The Real Housewives of New Jersey and that she seemed like a b***h. Some fans were outraged. Were you surprised by the public’s response?
Marisa Zanuck: I was shocked. It was my first time on a red carpet, and I was just giving my opinion on what I had seen of her on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, which made Teresa look bad. It was just how I felt at the time based on seeing a few episodes—but now that I’m on the Housewives, I get that we don’t know the whole story and I understand how things can be taken out of context in the process of editing.
I actually connected with Teresa since then, and I don’t feel that way about her anymore. We have no hard feelings toward each other, and we are on good terms.
RTVM: You are friends with both Kyle Richards and Brandi Glanville, who sometimes have conflict. Is it difficult to maintain a friendship with both?
Marisa Zanuck: No, it’s not a problem. I think Kyle and Brandi could have been friends under different circumstances, but one of Kyle’s first interactions with Brandi was going into defense mode over her sister Kim.
RTVM: What did you think about Brandi’s comment about you being mean to your husband?
Marisa Zanuck: She didn’t mean any harm; Brandi is really a girls’ girl, and her criticism of the way I was speaking to my husband was really just a friend looking out. She would have said the same thing on-camera as off-camera.
RTVM: What do you think about some of the criticism Kyle is facing from fans?
Marisa Zanuck: I’m not sure why Kyle is getting a bum rap. I’ve known her for 10 years and she is really a fun, good person.
RTVM: What do you think Faye Resnick?
I’ve known Faye for a while and we were always fine until recently. I’m not sure why. I saw her at a party, and I felt a little tension between us.
RTVM: What can you tell us about yourself that The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills doesn’t show?
Marisa Zanuck: I wish the show would show more of my life with my family. I have an amazing and funny relationship with my husband Dean, our kids, my mom, my sisters…maybe Bravo would show more if I were to become a full-time Housewife.
RTVM: So would you come back to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills if Bravo asked you?
Marisa Zanuck: I probably would. I appeared quiet on the show at first because I wanted to get to know the ladies first and not make it all about me just to be relevant. But since I have gotten to know the other women, it would be fun to film more with them.
I also appreciate all the comments on my blogs that viewers take the time to write. I read all of them, and I like that connection with the audience. I’m lucky that I haven’t gotten a lot of mean-spirited comments; but when there is constructive criticism, I appreciate it.
