American Idol Hollywood Week rages on as the 43 remaining guys take the stage for their solo auditions. Judges Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, and Nicki Minaj make decisions after every group of eight singers this season. Host Ryan Seacrest promises shocking cuts, major meltdowns, and phenomenal performances. We shall see…
Paul Jolley lets his nerves show, however, he pulls himself together to sing Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away.” Still, Nicki tells Paul that she is turned off by his display of emotions and annoyed by his lack of professionalism.
Lazaro Arbos sings Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory.” Curtis Finch Jr. puts his own spin on “Jar of Hearts.” Mariah says, “I’m a fan of you, I think you know that by now.”
Results: All three guys – Paul, Lazaro, and Curtis – advance.
Devin Velez’s takes on “What A Wonderful World.” Keith says Devin was born to sing. Gurpreet Singh Sarin scats during his version of “Georgia on My Mind.”
Cortez Shaw sings Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny.” Personally, I think Cortez tries to hard and over sings all of his songs. I’m not a fan.
Matheus Fernandes fails to impress the judges with his super loud version of Kelly Clarkson‘s “Stronger.” Nicki is over Matheus’ pity party.
Results: Devin, Gurpreet, Cortez, and Adam Sanders make the cut. Matheus is out.
Unlike Paul Jolley, Nicholas Mathis does let his emotions get in the way of his solo. Nicholas begs for another chance, saying he’s chasing his dreams, but Keith says it felt more like he was just chasing the song.
Papa Peachez sings “You and I” by Lady Gaga, much to America and Nicki’s dismay. She says, “I’m so disappointed. I don’t know why you would choose that song. I can’t believe you would let this competition suck that amazing quality out of you.” Papa insists it hasn’t, adding, “A lot of people who try out for American Idol are more or less puppets, and I’ve got my own thing going on.”
Jimmy Smith’s version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” is light years above what Papa just did. Mariah admits that Jimmy is one of her favorites.
Results: Nicholas and Papa are out. Jimmy, Johnny Keyser, Vincent Powell, and two others advance to the next round.
Nick Boddington, who was eliminated in Las Vegas last season, wows Keith with his take on Grace Potter’s “Stars.” Keith says, “”Your range is beautiful. I thought it was a really good performance.” I agree. This is easily my favorite solos thus far.
Wearing a baggy, shiny suit and turquoise sneakers, Charlie Askew belts out Gotye’s “Somebody I Used to Know.” I cannot get enough of Charlie… neither can Nicki… she gushes, “I am obsessed with you. Today, you became an artist. You have this quirky thing that is so odd, it’s right,” to which Charlie says, “I glorify weirdness.”
Results: Nick, Charlie, JDA, and Mathenee Traco move forward.
Burnell Taylor and Marvin Calderon both choose to sing Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts.”
Micah Johnson fails to impress the judges with “I Told You So” from Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood. Personally, I liked the tender song from Micah.
Results: Burnell and Marvin move on. Sadly, Micah is out. He says, “I’m still living. I still have a job. It’s tough to get cut, but I’ve been through a lot worse.”
More bad news: Early favorites Gabe Brown, Sanni M’Mairura, and Nate Tao have also been eliminated. The judges chose 28 guys, not 20, so eight more guys will be cut next Thursday.
The females get their turn in Hollywood next week. Who are you most looking forward to? Did the judges make the right decisions tonight?
