John Mayer has made some pretty controversial statements about ex-girlfriends in the past, what with calling Fashion Star mentor Jessica Simpson “sexual napalm” and criticizing Taylor Swift for engaging in “cheap songwriting.” But the singer is now ready to admit that he really hasn’t treated his lady friends all that well.
Few celebrities are criticized for their love lives (and their less-than-kind remarks about their love lives) more than John Mayer. The singer has taken plenty of flak for a 2010 Playboy interview in which he compared former girlfriend Jessica Simpson to “crack cocaine” and then added, “Sexually it was crazy. That’s all I’ll say.”
John also took some heat in 2012, when he responded angrily to a Taylor Swift song entitled, “Dear John.” We did actually sympathize with him in this instance, as Taylor has become notorious about including not-so-subtle details about past relationships in her lyrics. And although she called him “presumptuous” for assuming the song was written about him, it’s a natural assumption to make given its title.
While he didn’t directly apologize to either Jessica Simpson or Taylor Swift, John Mayer was at least willing to own up to past mistakes during a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning.“I was just a jerk,” he admitted, explaining that his poor behavior stemmed from a need to be liked by all. It’s very liberating when you finally realize it’s impossible to make everyone like you. “I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction”
We’re not sure how John Mayer would ever think that some of the things he said could make anyone like him, but hey, this is probably the closest to apology we’ll ever hear from him.
