According to FOX, Balelo took his own life two days after being arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamines. His body was found Monday morning inside his running car in a warehouse in Simi Valley, California. The Ventura County medical examiner’s office said Balelo succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
He was scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Feb. 19.
Balelo was an immigrate from Portugal who started an auction business in 2011. He appeared on several episodes of Storage Wars and was known as “Rico Suave.” He is best known for purchasing a storage locker containing a stolen, rare Superman comic book valued at $1 million. He later returned the stolen comic book a to its rightful owner, actor Nicolas Cage.
Recent suspected drug activity was not the first for Balelo. He admitted to a 2009 drug conviction but said it wasn’t his fault, he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. “Friends of mine were using a hotel room that was rented in my room. They were partying in there I didn’t do anything wrong. I wasn’t even there. It’s not a big deal,” he told RadarOnline two-months ago.
His fiancé, Elizabeth Metzidis added, “I want people to know Mark has a heart of gold” and helped raise funds for autism awareness.
After hearing of Balelo’s death, other Storage Wars stars took to Twitter to express their condolences. Auctioneer, Dan Dotson said, “Our hearts & prayers go out to Mark’s small children & family as well as his devoted fiancé Elizabeth RIP Mark Balelo.”
And fellow bidder Darrell Sheets, also known as The Gambler said, “Mr Balelo may you now be removed from your demons R.I.P. I will pray for your soul and loved one.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mark’s family and friends.
