The Face Recap: Game On!

February 13, 2013 06:33 AM by Donna W. Martin

Tonight was the much-anticipated premiere of Oxygen’s, The Face, airing on Tuesdays at 9/8c, the latest modeling show where 12 aspiring models compete to become “the face” of ULTA Beauty. Throughout the series, three groups of models led by supermodel coaches Naomi Capmbell, Karolina Kurkova, and Coco Rocha, will go through real life assignments including photo shoots and commercials. One model will be eliminated each week until only one remains. How did the 12 models handle their first assignments? Who made it through to next week? And who was eliminated? Keep reading to find out!

Team Naomi:

Jocelyn, 20, Sandra, 20, Zi Lin, 25, and Aleksandra, 23

Team Karolina:

Christy, 24, Devyn, 22, Madeleine, 23, and Ebony, 21

Team Coco:

Stephanie, 21, Marlee, 23, Margaux, 23, and Brittany, 25

The models met with host, Nigel Barker for their first assignment, a test shoot. Test shoots are typically used by photographers and agents to hone model skills before sending them out on jobs.

Test Shoot #1 – Who Wore It Better?

For the test shoot, the models competed as individuals. Each week, the test shoots will be judged by one of the coaches. This week was Naomi’s turn. She said she would be looking for personal style, how they put the clothes together, and which accessories they chose to compliment the look. For this test shoot Naomi picked the outfits but the models got to choose their accessories and shoes.

Round 1

Devyn and Stephanie dressed in a party girl theme wearing a black sequin cocktail dress with a black feather bolero jacket. Naomi said Devyn over accessorized but she liked Stephanie’s closed toe shoes and big earrings. Stephanie was the winner.

Marlee and Sandra dressed in a business casual theme wearing black skinny pants and a sleeveless oversized shirt. Naomi said she liked Marlee’s belt and necklace but said she wouldn’t have matched the bracelet to the shoes in Sandra’s look. Marlee was the winner.

Margaux and Aleksandra dressed in a 60’s girl theme wearing a mod outfit. Naomi said the clothes fit Margaux very well but Aleksandra’s ankle boots were too heavy. Margaux was the winner.

Ebony and Christy dressed in an army chic theme wearing a green mini-dress and a military jacket. Naomi told Christy she wanted to see something a little unexpected. Ebony was the winner.

Zi Lin and Brittany dressed in a city girl theme wearing a trench coat and python pants. Zi Lin could not fit into her pants so she had to go without them. Nigel said it was a very sexy look. Naomi said she loved Brittany’s shoes and Nigel said the bag she chose was a disaster. Zi Lin was the winner.

Jocelyn and Madeleine dressed in a biker chic theme wearing a leather jacket. Madeleine’s shoes didn’t fit but she wore them anyway. However, when she came out teary-eyed, Naomi questioned if she was going to “cry in front of the press and magazines or say ‘I’m going to look my best, take the pain, and get the best picture.’” Naomi liked that Jocelyn pushed the sleeves up in her look. Jocelyn was the winner.

The six winners from round 1 went on to round 2.

Round 2

Ebony and Margaux dressed in a red carpet theme wearing a pink flowy dress. Margaux was the winner.

Jocelyn and Marlee dressed in a downtown girl theme wearing a sleeveless denim jacket. Naomi said Marlee’s shoes looked like something you would wear to work in a hospital. Jocelyn was the winner.

Stephanie and Zi Lin dressed in a hippie chic theme wearing a patterned shirtdress. Zi Lin was the winner.

The three winners from round 2 went on to round 3.

Round 3

Margaux, Jocelyn, and Zi Lin dressed in a masculine chic theme, the most challenging outfit on the rack. Naomi said she loved Margaux’s bracelet and earrings…so chic. She loved Jocelyn’s pink belt but said the bag was too big for the outfit. And she said Zi Lin was giving her Dolce Gabbana showing her midriff and giving the Sicilian sexy look they are known for.

Zi Lin was the test shoot winner and received a $5,000 shopping spree to Top Shop.

The next day, the models met Nigel at the Brooklyn Navy yard for their next assignment, a campaign. The campaign was a team challenge and the winning team would be featured in W Magazine and on US Magazine’s home page.

For the campaign, the models were given a storyboard with five plates depicting a downtown girls versus uptown girls theme. Their assignment was to complete the story by acting out the final scene.

Each team had to choose clothing and portray characters. The coaches arrived and helped their teams with clothing choices and poses.

Patrick DeMarchelier was the photographer. Team Naomi was up first followed by Team Karolina and Team Coco.

After the photo shoot, the models left. Guest judges, Stefano Tonchi, W Magazine, Editor in Chief, along with the bookings editor and model agent, Bethann Hardison reviewed the photos and chose Team Karolina as the winners.

The next day, the models got to see their campaign photos and were told Team Karolina won the challenge. Naomi and Coco had to nominate one model from their team to go up for elimination. Naomi chose Aleksandra and Coco chose Stephanie.

As the coach of the winning team, Karolina decided who remained in the competition and who went home. After reviewing their photos, Karolina told Aleksandra she was beautiful and strong but didn’t try hard enough and she didn’t see her passion.

She told Stephanie she was young and passionate but was very inexperienced. She said her picture wasn’t the greatest and it looked like she didn’t know what she was doing.

Karolina chose to eliminate Aleksandra.

When Stephanie walked out, Naomi knew Aleksandra had been eliminated and said, “That’s not right…I have to leave.” Then she went into a room with her three remaining models and wouldn’t let the cameras follow her.

When Karolina came in and saw that Naomi was not in the room, she went after her. But Naomi wasn’t having any part of it. She said, “Don’t talk to me right now…Get out!”

When Naomi came out, she walked up to Karolina and said, “I am disappointed in your choice, Karolina…It’s game on from now on!” Then she turned and walked out.

I really enjoyed this show. First it is professionally shot. It doesn’t look like some cheap set like in some model shows of the past. Everything is clean and tasteful and the guests judges are at the top of their game, which correlates to the hope that this is a REAL modeling competition.
I love Naomi…..and the other judges look and dress like the Super Models that they are! No schtk or silly nonsense and weave and costumes for them. Eat your heart out Tyra!!!!
