Top Chef Seattle Recap: Alaskan Adventure

February 13, 2013 09:47 PM by Veronica Dudo

It’s a helicopter, now a dog sled, and a glacier! The final three cheftestants embark on an adventure of a lifetime on this week’s episode of Top Chef: Seattle. Roy Choi is the guest judge on the Bravo reality TV series, plus one of the competitors has a panic attack that threatens their ability to compete. In the end only two chefs are victorious and move on to the final rounds in Los Angeles. Who will make it through? Keep reading to find out!

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Emmy and James Beard Award-winning series that has dished out lots of drama this season! The winning chef will receive $125,000 furnished by Healthy Choice, a feature in Food & Wine magazine, a showcase at the Annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and will earn the title of “Top Chef.”

The contestants are Joshua Valentine from Oklahoma City; Brooke Williamson from Los Angeles and Sheldon Simeon from Hawaii.

It’s been an interesting season so far with some fan favorites going home! However, thanks to Top Chef Last Kitchen the eliminated chefs get another chance to return to the reality TV show for the finale.

The chefs are taken to an area where a helicopter is waiting. Brooke becomes very emotional and has a panic attack which threatens her ability to compete. Viewers have learned this season that Brooke has a fear of heights. After having a good cry Brooke gets it together and makes the trip in the helicopter. At the top of the mountain, the chefs find out they will get rides in dog sleds! Brooke’s strength and determination really paid off since she is selected as the winner of the Quickfire challenge!

For the Elimination Challenge, the final three chefs must create dishes that are inspired by the moment when they knew they wanted to be chefs.

Emeril and award-winning chef, Roy Choi cook an emotional meal to set the tone. Meanwhile, Josh is on 24-hour baby watch with his wife ready to give birth at any time. Host Padma Lakshmi and guest judge Roy Choi join Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, Gail Simmons, head judge Tom Coliccio and the Governor of Alaska and his wife for the big dinner.

After tasting the dishes, the judges deliberate and must pick a winner and send someone packing. Unanimously, Brooke Williamson is selected as the winner. In the end only Brooke Williamson and Sheldon Simeon are the two chefs who are victorious and move on to the final rounds in Los Angeles.

As for the elimination, the judges decide to send home Joshua Valentine. However, Josh did receive some good news–his wife gave birth to a little girl and they named her, Georgia! Plus, he’s not completely out of the competition just yet. He will get a second chance when he face’s off against Kristen in Top Chef’s Last Chance Kitchen. The winner of Last Chance Kitchen will also have a spot in the finale as well as the winner of Save a Chef.

The “what happens to the losers’ bracket” information above is incorrect. I expected that there would be a cookoff of the reigning champion of Last Chance Kitchen (Kristen), the Fan Favorite (it turned out surprisingly to be Lizzie instead of CJ) and the loser of the main bracket (which turned out to be Josh). BRAVO arranged for this to end with Josh definitely out but the winner’s announcement to be delayed to the start of the 2-part finale in the next episode.
