Hollywood week is just about over for the boys of American Idol but it’s just getting started for the girls. On tonight’s episode, 162 girls made their way to Hollywood. Who made it through the a cappella and group rounds? And who went home? Keep reading to find out.
Day one started with the a Capella rounds. Lines of 10 singers hit the stage to sing one song each before learning if they would be moving on or going home. By the end of the a Capella rounds, the field had been narrowed from 162 contestants to 76.
At 8:30 p.m., the girls were split into groups and they began the difficult task of choosing a song, arranging harmonies, coming up with choreography, and meshing as a group. Then it was time to meet with the vocal coaches. Most of the groups worked well into the night.
The next day 19 groups took the stage accompanied by the Idol band. Randy was busy in the studio so the judging was left to Nicki, Keith, and Mariah.
The Swaggetts – Melinda Ademi, Kamaria Ousley, Denise Jackson, and Candice Glover sang “Hit ‘Em Up Style.” Keith said, “Wow, great song choice.” And with that, all four were through to the next round.
Raising Cain – Morgan Leigh Boberg, Lauren Mink, Brandy Hotard, and one other unknown member sang “Sin Wagon” and again, it was an easy yes sending all four through to the solo rounds.
Almost Famous – Savannah Votion, Lizz Weiss, Daysia Hall, and J’Leigh Chauvin sang “Somebody That I Used to Know.” Despite the fact Daysia forgot the words, she was the only one from the group to move on to the next round. Savannah was visibly angry and said the decision was “wrong.”
Dramatics – Kriss Mincey, Janel Stinney, Cristabel Clack, and one other unknown group member sang “If I Die Young.” While the group started out strong at 9 p.m. the night before, by 4 a.m. things had taken a turn for the worse and Janel was separating herself from the rest of her group. However, during their performance, it was Janel who didn’t sing a single audible word. Much to our surprise, Nicki said she enjoyed the performance because she felt it. All four girls went through to the solo rounds.
Three other groups hit the stage and only one member from each went to the next round, Shubha Vedula, Sarina-Joi Crowe, and Aubrey Cleland.
Urban Hue – Seretha Guinn, Tenna Torres, Kiara Lanier, and Jet Hermano sang “American Boy.” Nicki said the performance was “painful [and] it wasn’t a good song choice.” She said Seretha had a “good voice but didn’t feel the star power” and Tenna Torres “put everybody to shame.” In the end, Seretha was sent home and the other three went through to the next round.
By this time, Randy joined the rest of the judges for the remaining group performances.
Pooh Snaps – Erin Christine, Zoanette Johnson, Lauren Bettes, and Isabelle were desperate to find common ground. Zoanette wanted to sing “Say My Name” but she was out voted and the group ended up with “Knock On Wood.” Randy said, “That was fun!” Lauren was sent home and the other three moved on in the competition.
Handsome Women – Shira Gavrielov, Alisha Dixon, Liz Bills, and Courtney Calle sang “Somebody That I Used To Know.” This group struggled with their song throughout the night and couldn’t seem to pull it together. Everybody was sent home except Liz. After they left the stage, Shira came back and asked for an explanation as to why she was eliminated. “I feel like I did a good job,” she said. “You may think you did great,” Randy said, “but the four of us collectively didn’t feel that way.”
For You – Stephanie Schimel, Alex Delaney, Kalli Therinae, and Holly Miller tried to sing “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” but it wasn’t all that great and they forgot the lyrics even though they had them written on their hands as a quick reference. Randy said the performance was “terrible.” Stephanie and Holly were sent through to the solo rounds and Alex and Kalli were sent home.
Dolly Chicks – Britnee Kellogg, Kree Harrison, Brandy Neelly, and Haley Davis sang “Sin Wagon.” This was another group that struggled through the night. Haley had a stomach bug and ended up going to bed at 2:30 a.m. leaving the rest of her team to practice without her. They stayed up all night and performed without any sleep. Haley got some rest but she didn’t know the lyrics and had relied on notes she’d written on her hands to get through the song. Nicki told her it was “disrespectful to look at your hands and the other girls. If you had a stomach bug, you didn’t have to go to bed. You could have stayed in there with the girls and played the music over and over to memorize the lyrics.” She explained, “You don’t just go to bed and leave everyone else up to work and then stare at them on stage.” Haley, Kree, and Brittnee moved on in the competition but Brandy was sent home.
The final group of the night, The Misfits took the stage at 8:30 p.m. Kez Ban, Breanna Steer, Angela Miller, and Janelle Arthur had a hard time meshing as a team especially with eccentric Kez Ban who wanted to sing “California Dreaming.” She was out voted and the group ended up going with “Be My Baby.” Nicki said their voices was “perfection.” She told Janelle she was her “favorite” and told “Kez Ban [she was] a crazy psycho and I love that,” Nicki said. All four girls made it through to the next round.
Hollywood week continues Thursday night where the top 20 boys and the top 20 girls will be revealed.
