American Idol Recap: The Girls Go Solo In Hollywood

February 15, 2013 03:30 AM by Melissa Stavarski

American Idol Hollywood Week comes to an end as the 47 remaining girls take the stage for their solo auditions. Also, judges Keith Urban, Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj reveal season 12′s Top 20 girls and Top 20 boys. Will your favorite contestants make the cut?

Angela Miller plays the piano and sings an original titled “You Set Me Free.” Angela’s performance gives me chills. The judges all stand for her. Keith says, “That is just a beautiful song.”

Candice Glover chooses Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire.” “You took it and did your own thing with it, in such a powerful way that it sounded like a big, massive record,” Keith says. “Well done.”

Janelle Arthur sings “I Told You So” from Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood. Nicki comments, “Janelle, I love that you always keep it subtle. You are a country superstar.”

Zoanette Johnson says her original is called “Buh Buh Da Buh,” adding, “Shhh… I made it up on stage yesterday.” It’s a train wreck… from beginning to end… absolute train wreck. When Zoanette isn’t singing, which is most of the time, she berates the backup singers and searches for her missing drum stick. Nicki says, “I am bowing down at your feet today.”

Results: Angela, Candice, Janelle, Zoanette, and (the unseen) Jett Hermano advance to the next round. It’s the end of the road for Kiara Lanier.

Shubha Vedula takes on Mariah Carey’s “Miracles,” and she does it well. Mariah says, “Brave girl. That was a nice moment for me, personally, so thank you.” Juliana Chahayed sings “Landslide” from Fleetwood Mac and Dixie Chicks, which Nicki says is one of her favorite songs.

Kez Ban takes the stage, saying, “”This song is very dear to my heart, and it is an original. In fact, my very favorite original, ever.” It’s terrible, but Nicki compliments Kez’s artistry.

Results: Kez goes home. Shubha and Juliana move forward.

An ill Ashlee Feliciano struggles with her notes. On the other hand, Melinda Ademi rocks the house with Jessie J’s “Price Tag.” Keith compliments Melinda’s self-awareness, adding, “It’s effortless, it’s clear, it’s energetic.”

Kree Harrison’s rendition of Grace Potter’s “Stars,” which she sings in memory of her parents, gives Keith goosebumps. Keith says, “I fought for you a few times, and I know why. Your voice is one my favorites in the entire competition.”

Results: Melinda and Kree go onto the next round. Ashlee and (the unseen) Briana Oakley are out.

Final cuts: The judges still need to eliminate four girls and eight boys.

While the judges easily cut three girls, they ask to hear one more song from Stephanie Schimel and Rachel Hale before they make their final decision. Stephanie goes home. Rachel stays.

The judges request a sing-off between Adam Sanders and Josh Holiday. Josh advances to the next round. It’s the end of the road for Adam Sanders, Peter Garrett, Marvin Calderon, Devin Jones, Kenny Harrison, Will White, Tony Foster, and David Leathers Jr.
