One month after her boyfriend allegedly committed suicide, Mindy McCready took a tragically similar exit, shooting herself on her front porch late last night. The country singer is just one in a long list of former Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew participants to succumb to her demons.
Country star Mindy McCready was found dead yesterday from what police claim “appears to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.” She leaves behind two young sons and legions of mourning fans. The big question now is, could this tragedy have been prevented? Mindy had long suffered from problems related to drug use and depression and, according to Billy McKnight (Mindy’s ex-boyfriend and father of her son Zander) Mindy had attempted suicide on multiple occasions in the past, although, obviously, was not successful until last night.
In attempt to deal with the demons that ultimately led to her demise, Mindy had taken part in the reality show Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew. While her time on the show appears to have been somewhat helpful in the short-term, Dr. Drew Pinsky claims that, “Unfortunately it seems that Mindy did not sustain her treatment.” Dr. Drew had hoped Mindy would seek help in the aftermath of her boyfriend’s suicide, which is why he had called her shortly after the tragic news broke. “Although she was fearful of stigma and ridicule she agreed with me that she needed to make her health and safety a priority.”
Mindy McCready is the fifth Celebrity Rehab alum to die. She was preceded by fellow season three participants Mike Starr and Joey Kovar, as well as season two cast members Rodney King and Jeff Conaway. The untimely deaths of so many particpants casts doubt on the efficacy of a reality television-based method of treatment, although, as Dr. Drew insists, no treatment plan is likely to work if it is quickly dropped.
