Gordon Ramsay apparently tired of all the Kitchen Nightmares on the East Coast, so now he’s checking out the disastrous restaurants in Cali! This week, the famous chef visits Nino’s in Long Beach, where he finally meets his cursing match!
Nino’s Italian Restaurant has long been a favorite destination in the Long Beach area. Established by immigrants in 1958, the restaurant soon became renowned for its excellent service and even better food. Unfortunately, the original owners have since retired, and it appears they chose the wrong team to act as replacements. As is the case in many family businesses, the leadership position was left to Nino, the eldest son. But Nino’s screwing the place over royally. What was once the talk of the town for its delicious meals is now the talk of the town…because it’s such an embarrassment.
Chef Ramsay hopes he can turn things around and give Nino’s that spark that made it so successful in the first place. First though, he needs to meet up with the current Nino and find out just what is leading to the establishment’s many problems. The first issue is immediately apparent: Nino is in complete denial surrounding his restaurant’s state of disrepair. He’s quick to make excuses for anything and everything, and if there’s one thing Chef Ramsay hates, it’s excuses!
Other problems quickly crop up, including a massive amount of gum stuck to the bottom of the table and multiple spelling and grammar errors in the menu. Honestly, don’t any of the restaurant managers on this show know how to use spell check? The usual taste testing takes place after Chef Ramsay rants about the filth everywhere. Surprise, surprise, he doesn’t like the food either. The chicken is slimy and the meatball was prepared nearly a full week ago. Our lovable chef certainly isn’t the only disappointed visitor, with several other customers also sending their food back.
We hear the rest of the family’s side of the story, including the fact that Nino has struggled with alcoholism. Things are good when he’s sober, but when he’s unable to maintain sobriety, the restaurant’s quality of service deteriorates quickly. Nino’s siblings finally voice their complaints but decide to give their brother one last chance to prove himself.
The obligatory makeover takes place and it is definitely appreciated by the family! With new equipment and decor, the staff’s motivation is at an all-time high. There is a bit of a struggle as the family attempts to relaunch the restaurant, but Nino is determined to take the reins and make the place a success. And by the end of the first night, it looks like the old Nino’s Italian Restaurant is back!
