Project Runway Elimination: Matthew Talks Country Crash & Burn

February 24, 2013 08:00 AM by Donna W. Martin

This week on Project Runway, Matthew was sent home when his country creation failed to impress his client, Miranda Lambert. Keep reading to see what he had to say about being eliminated from the competition.

According to Lifetime, Matthew said, “I’m a little relieved to be honest; I hate to say that. I used to consider myself quite a competitor.” But the rigors of competition proved too intense. “The kind of nature of these challenges and the kind of anatomy of what each designer goes through for this process is very, very stressful. He explained, “It’s kind of like this pressure cooker environment where you are expected to produce something super creative, super relevant, have great construction, and you’re given not a great window of time to produce.”

During the challenge, Matthew had trouble deciding if he wanted to do a formfitting skirt like a mini or if he wanted to do something with volume. Tim told him those were two polarities but Matthew assured him he was working it out in his head. “More than anything,” Tim said, “I just want you to believe in what you are doing. I mean, you’re incredibly talented. You’re here for goodness sake.”

But Matthew’s lack of confidence showed in his finished garment. And when it came time for critiques, Miranda Lambert said, “I don’t even want to talk about it because obviously you know what’s wrong with it. I just want to talk about you not having confidence in your own craft because if you don’t have confidence in your craft then no one else can.”

After the judges’ decision, Matthew said he was a little relieved because he didn’t have to deal with the stress but at the same time, he said, “I was a little disappointed in myself that I never got to really convey my point of view.”

“For me it’s kind of a mixed feeling now.” He explained, “It’s like that feeling when you know something is wrong with you physically and then you get diagnosed with something. The relief of you finally know what it is but now you have to deal with it. It’s that kind of mixture of emotion and that’s kind of how I feel right now.”

What did you think of Matthew’s design? Is it something you would wear? Post a comment and let us know.
