Dancing With The Stars: Pro Dancer Shakeup

February 26, 2013 02:00 PM by Stephanie Gustafson

We’ve grown accustomed to the smiling faces of Chelsie Hightower, Louis Van Amstel and Anna Trebunskaya on Dancing with the Stars — as well as that perpetual scowl of bad boy Maksim Chmerkovskiy. But all four dancers will be absent during the show’s upcoming season. What happened?

It’s always exciting to see new dancers on DWTS, and we’ll get our fair share this season, seeing as three newbies have joined the cast. But we’re also sad to see favorites Chelsie, Maks, Anna and Louis exit the show. Some of these dancers are planning on leaving for good, while others are hoping for a return in the near future. Maks’ departure was especially noteworthy, as the dancer has long been a favorite among viewers. But he says that his decision to leave the show has nothing to do with any problems he might have with producers or fellow dancers (such as his new ex Peta Murgatroyd). In a recent statement, Maks announced that he would indeed be leaving the cast, because he is, ”eager to explore other opportunities that have been made possible because of Dancing with the Stars. I’m going to take this time to dive into producing and acting, while fulfilling my sponsorship obligations.”

While Maksim’s decision to leave the show was voluntary, that does not appear to be the case for fellow pro Chelsie Hightower. In a brief interview with TMZ, Chelsie let slip that she was absolutely not leaving the show by choice. But that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s left the show on bad terms. A rep for the show explained, “We frequently rotate the professional dancers, so it is not unusual for them to rest a cycle. As we consider who will be matched up each season, there are a lot of factors that dictate which couples make the best pairings.”

I am very disappointed that Chelsie Hightower will not be on this season. She is a very accomplished dancer and a beautiful one. I would think that seniority would play in this. If a pro would like to be back then they would have that choice. You all do not treat your loyal employee right.

I just really wanted Anna Trebunskaya to be there, but then I saw the male cast and thought, “Well, maybe it’s good Anna is sitting this one out!” LOL But she will certainly be missed!

We will particularly miss Louis. He is the best teacher taking the least able celebs and turning them into dancers! He is undervalued in our opinion. We love Chelsea for her youthful enthusiasm and Anna for smooth dances. Dancers can’t necessarily teach and choreograph these regulars make it look easy and the producers are dopes. Time will tell

I enjoyed all of the pros & especially liked Maks and Derek.

I don’t think any one person leaving will hurt the show’s ratings. I wish there were some pros “of color”. I can’t believe there are not some African-American or Asian professional dancers.
