American Idol‘s sudden death round continues in Las Vegas. The final ten girls take the stage, hoping to be one of Season 12′s Top 10 Girls, but only five will move forward. Who impresses judges Keith Urban, Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey? Who falls flat?
Melinda Ademi sings Jessie J’s “Nobody’s Perfect.” Personally, I find Melinda’s “gasps” into the mic to be extremely distracting. Keith thinks she has a lot of potential. Nicki tells Melinda that she cannot stop thinking about Angela Miller’s rendition of the same song. Ouch. Mariah
and her boobs hears nerves in Melinda’s voice.
Juliana Chahayed sings a slow, sleepy version of Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper.” I’m confused. She sounds like she’s out of breath but appears to be putting very little effort into her vocals. While Keith says he loves the purity of her tone and compares her to Jewel and Taylor Swift, he thinks she struggled with her pitch. Nicki appreciates Juliana’s signature sound. Is out of breath a signature sound? Am I watching the same show?
Candice Glover takes on Carole King’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and does it justice. The audience explodes, and Keith quips, “So the crowd didn’t like it at all.” The fact that Candice was eliminated in Vegas last season boggles Nicki’s mind. That said, Randy says, “Yo listen, you’ve grown since last season. You now believe you belong here.” Did Nicki strike a nerve, Randy? Candice probably felt like she belonged on American Idol last season as well.
Jett Hermano‘s rendition of Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World)” splits the judges. Keith is thrilled with Jett’s unique arrangement of the song. Nicki and Randy agree that the song needed more, a climax of sorts, and feel underwhelmed. Mariah finds Jett to be “intriguing.”
Cristabel Clack sings “No One” by Alicia Keys. I hate it; she sounds like she’s suffering from laryngitis. Then, Randy stands for her, and I think maybe I need to have my hearing checked. Not only does Keith think she’s fantastic, but he also compliments the “smokey, croaky” sound of her voice. While Nicki likes the rasp, she thinks it got a little out of control. Randy says,”You’re one of those race horse singers – you allow yourself to just go.”
Aubrey Cleland takes on Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” and impresses the judges. Please excuse my Paula moment… but she looks amazing… great dress and shoes! Keith compliments the poise and fire in Aubrey’s voice. Nicki says, “Thank you! It was beginning to feel like I was in the Twilight Zone. For the first time, somebody came out here looking, sounding, and feeling like a current artist.” Mariah adds “limitless” to the long list of compliments for Aubrey.
Rachel Hale sings “Nothing But The Water” by Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. While Keith thinks the song got on top, he compliments her spirit and enthusiastic performance. Nicki agrees with the enthusiasm, asking, “Where did this burst of crazy confidence come from?!?” Randy also appreciates the uptempo performance after listening to so many ballads.
Breanna Steer takes on Jazmine Sullivan’s “Bust Your Windows” and impresses the judges. She looks fab – another American Idol wannabe with exceptional style. Nicki thinks Breanna and Aubrey should come together and form an all girl group. Nicki adds things like “had your swag on” and “you’re giving me sexy on a stick.” Mariah loves the song and loves Breanna’s delivery of it.
Janelle Arthur sings Lady Antebellum’s “Just A Kiss.” Keith thinks the song didn’t allow her to showcase her talent. Nicki tells Janelle that her voice fell flat, adding, “Don’t do that again. Don’t ever try too hard. You don’t have to try hard.” While Mariah agrees with Keith about song choice, she loves that there isn’t “an ounce of pretentiousness” coming from Janelle.
Zoanette Johnson sings “Circle of Life” from The Lion King. Is it just me? This is a little over the top for American Idol, though I think she’d be amazing on Broadway. Randy, Keith, and Nicki stand. Keith says, “I love that I have no clue what you’re going to do. Sometimes I wonder if you do. Kudos to the queen of the jungle.” Nicki is in tears. Randy loves Zoanette’s infectious spirit. Mariah says her spirit is too big to contain.
