Despite what you may think, gymnasts are not necessarily born talented dancers. Shawn Johnson occasionally struggled with the footwork on Dancing with the Stars, and current Olympic participant Aly Raisman expects to encounter similar issues. But she’s still excited to take on the challenge!
Contestants on Dancing with the Stars who have backgrounds in figure skating or gymnastics tend to get a fair amount of criticism from fans of the show. Not because there’s any problem with their dancing, but simply due to the fact that fans assume these contestants have an unfair advantage on the rest of the competition. But new competitor Aly Raisman insists this is not the case. Although she’s excited to be on the show, she’s worried about her lack of ballroom experience. “I honestly have no idea how to characterize my dance skills. All I know is that I am going to need a lot of help, because it is actually completely different than gymnastics.”
That being said, Aly is always up for a new challenge and her participation on the reality show will surely be know exception! She explains, “I have never tried any of the dances that I will do on the show, so it will definitely be a challenge, but that is why I am so excited. I love working hard and trying new things.”
Aly recently had the opportunity to meet partner Mark Ballas. This pairing could be an advantage in and of itself, as Mark has already danced with Shawn and thus has some idea on how to train a gymnast in the art of ballroom dance.
