American Idol wraps up its sudden death round in Las Vegas tonight. The final ten guys take the stage, hoping to be one of Season 12′s Top 10 Guys, but only five move forward. Who wows judges Keith Urban, Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey? Who goes home?
Mathenee Treco sings “A Little Less Conversation” by Elvis. Personally, I’d appreciate a little less shouting. Keith thinks Mathenee sacrifices “voice” for “entertainment” and Nicki throws out “cheesy” and “karaoke.” Wrong song choice, according to Randy, and Mariah wants to have him over for dinner. Huh?
Gurpreet Singh Sarin‘s rendition of James Morrison’s “Nothing Ever Hurt Like You” disappoints the judges. Keith and Nicki both tell Gurpreet that leaving the guitar behind was a mistake.
Judge of the Year Randy adds, “Man. Wow. Dawg. Dude. Really. OMG. Honestly? That was terrible.” Mariah prefers Gurpreet’s softer voice.
Vincent Powell takes on “Cause I Love You” by Lenny Williams. It’s so good, Mariah, Randy, and Keith are on their feet. “That was crazy,” Keith says. “Preach on, Brother Vincent!” Randy thinks Vincent is in it to win it! Vincent also hears “finally” from Mariah and “get it, Papa Smurf” from fellow American Idol contestant Zoanette Johnson.
I love Nick Boddington‘s voice despite my aversion to falsetto. Sadly, Nick’s rendition of James Morrison’s “Say Something Now” fails to excite the judges. While Keith loves the timbre of his voice, he wishes Nick would show more emotion on stage. Randy complains about a lack of moments, but Mariah says she heard a moment towards the end. A couple of these judges are paid entirely too much money.
Josh Holiday sings an original. Josh begins at the piano, and that’s painful enough, but then he gets up and waves his hands around in the air like he just don’t care. Ugh. Keith tells Josh to let loose. Nicki cops an attitude with the audience when she gets booed. Randy actually likes the song and arrangement, he says, but not the actual performance.
Burnell Taylor‘s rendition of John Legend’s “This Time” wows the judges. While I find his “busy hands” to be awfully distracting, I cannot deny the sweet tone of his voice. Keith praises Burnell’s strikingly original everything. Nicki says, “Right now, today, I would pay to see you sing. The best by far tonight. By far.” Randy and Mariah are equally pleased.
David Wells looks like a cowboy, plays the guitar, and sings “Fever.” It’s an interesting song choice, to say the least, that leaves the judges feeling confused and underwhelmed. Mariah talks about David’s group performance in Hollywood. Randy and Keith agree – poor song choice. Nicki seems to be into David until she catches a glimpse of his gorgeous wife. Can David’s segment get any weirder?
Bryant Tadeo sings Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” and nearly puts me to sleep. Don’t get me wrong, Bryant has a lovely voice, but this performance is dreadfully boring. “Beautiful voice,” Keith says. “You made a connection, and that’s what I’m listening and feeling for.” Nicki compliments one note but hates the rest. Mariah appreciates Bryant’s raw talent.
Cortez Shaw slows down David Guetta’s “Titanium” and leaves the judges feeling torn. Shocker – Nicki is hot for Cortez. Randy notes a few issues with pitch, adding, “At the end, when you hit those big notes, I was shocked.” While Keith is not a fan of the slower version of the song, Mariah loves it.
Lazaro Arbos sings Keith Urban’s “Tonight I Wanna Cry.” I usually love Lazaro’s voice; however, I can’t understand his words tonight. I actually hear “Wind Beneath My Winds” more than “Tonight I Wanna Cry.” Am I alone? Keith likes Lazaro’s voice but thinks he struggled with the song. Randy loves the “sweet spot” in his voice on the chorus.
