Recently, we learned that Hawaii legislature had proposed a new privacy bill named for former American Idol judge, Steven Tyler that would protect celebrities from reporters and photographers. And now, just one month later, the state senate has announced they are indeed passing the bill. Keep reading for more details.
According to ABC, Tyler, who owns a home in Maui asked Senator Kalani English to sponsor the bill following an incident last December. Tyler explained that photos of him and his girlfriend were taken and then published in a national magazine without his knowledge or permission and that the incident had caused drama within his family.
The bill will protect celebrities against invasion of privacy from reporters and photographers who follow and harass them while living in Hawaii or visiting the state for vacation. The bill states that any per who captures a photo or sound recording of a celebrity while they are taking part in a personal or family activity where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy, would be held liable and the celebrity would have the right to sue for damages.
Senator Sam Slom opposed the bill saying, “We have been the butt of many editorials and jokes across the country for this proposed legislation.” And Slom wasn’t the only one to oppose the bill. National media organizations such as the National Press Photographers Association and the Society of Professional Journalists submitted testimony in opposition fearing the proposed bill’s impact on freedom of the press.
However, the bill passed just the same with 23 of the state’s 25 senators voting in its favor because they believe celebrities are deterred from buying property or vacationing in Hawaii because of harassment from paparazzi.
