More than 39 million votes were cast to determine American Idol‘s top 5 guys and top 5 girls for Season 12. Ryan Seacrest delivers results one at a time, and then each finalist sings a victory song and chats with judges Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Randy Jackson, and Mariah Carey (who brought two, um, wild cards to the show tonight). Reality TV is the only forum on the planet where it takes ninety minutes to announce ten names. Without further ado…
This is American Idol… and this is your Top 10…
Top 5 Guys
Paul Jolley sings Heart’s “Alone”
Keith is happy to see that Paul is listening to their constructive criticism, saying, “You channeled theatrics into passion tonight, and you did it really well.”
Burnell Taylor sings India.Arie’s “Ready for Love”
Mariah says Burnell’s performance is impeccable, adding, “I hope everybody listening really heard the intricacies of what you did vocally.”
Devin Velez sings Israel Houghton’s “The Power of One”
Nicki says singing in Spanish “obviously helped” Devin and suggests that he “stay in that lane.”
Curtis Finch Jr. sings John Legend’s “So High”
Yo Randy Raps is all like, never disappoints, yo, big props, yo, so happy!
Lazaro Arbos sings Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”
Mariah praises Lazaro’s consistent growth, adding, “America’s watching, and they love you.”
It’s the end of the road for Charlie Askew, Nick Boddington, Vincent Powell, Cortez Shaw, and Elijah Liu. I’m sad about saying goodbye to Nick.
Top 5 Girls
Candice Glover sings Mary J. Blige’s “Goin’ Down”
Randy points out that Candice can, you know, really sing and that American Idol is, you know, a singing competition. Awesome. Thanks for the insight, Dawg.
Angie Miller sings Beyonce’s “I Was Here”
An emotional Keith compliments Angie’s vocal ability and song writing skills, adding, “All you needed, baby, was a break. You’re so ready to go. I’m so happy for you.”
Janelle Arthur sings Dierks Bentley’s Home
Nicki believes Janelle is going to be a huge country star. To Janelle, Nicki says, “You came alive today. This is the best you’ve ever looked and sounded.”
Amber Holcomb sings Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman”
Mariah is at a loss for words. Take your time, Mariah; we’ll just stare at your cleavage until something pops into your head. Mariah eventually carries on about Amber’s kind heart and endless potential.
Kree Harrison sings Susan Tedeschi’s “Evidence”
While there isn’t enough time for her to consult with the judges, Kree says, “Let’s have some fun y’all.”
It’s the end of the road for Adriana Latonio, Zoanette Johnson, Breanna Steer, Tenna Torres, and Aubrey Cleland. I was really rooting for Aubrey.
Surprise: Next week, the runner-up girl and the runner-up guy will compete in a sing-off. The winner gets a spot in the American Idol summer tour.
