On this week’s episode of Project Runway, the 10 remaining designers were challenged to create prom dresses using duck tape. Who had it all wrapped up? And whose design didn’t stick? Take the jump to find out.
For this week’s challenge, the designers were paired into teams of two and were asked to work together to create a fashion forward prom dress made of duck tape. There were 36 different colors and designs to choose from.
After Tim explained the challenge, teams were formed. Stanley won last week’s challenge so he got first pick and then Tim brought out the button bag to draw the next person who would choose their teammate and so on until everyone was paired up.
Stanley and Layana
Kate and Tu
Michelle and Amanda
Richard and Daniel
Patricia and Samantha
The designers didn’t have any time to waste and had to work fast because they had less than a day to put their creations together. For the rest of the day, they sketched and worked on their dresses.
Tim came in to check on their progress. He loved Stanley and Layana’s skirt and sleek top but said they needed to add something that would make it pop. Patricia looked scared to death and Samantha was a little panicked because they had different visions for their dress. And it didn’t help that Tim said it looked like the bride of the tin woodsman. He cautioned Kate and Tu saying their dress looked flat, lackluster, and forgettable, but said Daniel and Richard’s dress looked like a wow.
Later that evening the models came in for a fitting and then the designers went to a high school for a Prom Dress Preview Show where a group of teenagers voted for their favorite design. Their votes factored in 20% toward the judges final decision. Patricia and Samantha’s dress received the most votes.
The next day, the designers made modifications and added finishing touches before hitting the runway.
Then it was time for the judges’ critiques. Patricia and Samantha were up first. Heidi said she loved their dress. Nina agreed saying the back looked fabulous. Guest judge and designer Chris Benz said the proportion was tricky but they did a great job and Zac said he loved Patricia’s textile.
Heidi said she didn’t respond to Kate and Tu’s dress at all, because it wasn’t fun and the model couldn’t move very well. Chris and Nina said the dress looked old fashioned and Zac said it lacked fantasy.
Nina said she loved the bow and styling on Stanley and Layana’s dress. Zac agreed saying the bow tied the look together. Heidi said it was fashion forward and Chris agreed saying it was really fresh and modern.
Chris said he loved Amanda and Michelle’s modern and fun dress. Zac agreed saying the shape was fantastic. Nina said it looked like something Gwen Stefani would wear and Heidi said she was really into it.
Heidi said Daniel and Richard’s dress looked like something from 20 years ago. Nina agreed saying it looked one-dimensional and made of tin. And Zac said the bust didn’t fit properly.
After the judges deliberated, Michelle was declared the challenge winner. Heidi told her $5,000 would be donated in her name to Autism Speaks on behalf of Duck brand duck tape.
Amanda, Stanley, Layana, Patricia, Samantha, Richard, and Daniel were all safe, which left Kate and Tu in the bottom.
Heidi told Tu they didn’t know who he was as a designer and they felt he was getting lost in the competition. She told Kate she was ultimately responsible because the dress was more her design than Tu’s.
Then she said, “Tu, you are out.” And “Kate, you are also out.”
What did you think of this week’s episode? Were you surprised that two designers were sent home? And did you agree with the judges’ decision? Post a comment and let us know.
