Season 2 of Fashion Star is finally here! Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos, and Nicole Richie are back as mentors, and they will each coach their own team of designers this season. The buyers include Terron E. Schaefer from Saks Fifth Avenue, Caprice Willard from Macy’s, and Erika De Salvatore from Express. This week, the Fashion Star hopefuls are asked to create a showstopping garment.
Team John: John’s team includes Amber Perley, Cassandra Hobbins, Silvia Arguello, and Brandon Scott.
Meet the Team: Amber runs a one-woman operation and likes the “sexy good girl” vibe. Cassandra, who quit her job to be on the show, is a little bit control freak and a lot quirky. Silvia settles for no less than perfection and amazing. John challenges Brandon to make his first (and rather ordinary) design special in some way.
On the Runway: Amber’s Mod Flair Dress is a success. Caprice and Terron offer respectable bids of $70,000 and $75,000, respectively, but Erika steals the spotlight with a bid of $175,000 for Express. Express wins, and Erika compliments the “peek-a-boo” addition to the dress.
The mentors all agree that Silvia’s Coatdress is a showstopper, and Terron bids $75,000 for Saks. Cassandra’s Crop Moto Jacket fails to garner any bids. On behalf of Macy’s, Caprice bids $120,000 on Brandon’s Hoodie Jacket Combo, because she “sees every guy wearing it.”
Team Nicole: Nicole’s team is made up of Daniel Silverstein, Priscilla Barrosso, Bret Young, and Johana Hernandez.
Meet the Team: Daniel’s eco-friendly designs are strongly influenced by skeletons, fossils, and various forms of nature. Priscilla’s vintage-inspired designs have an “updated grandmother’s attic” feel to them. Bret feels as if Fashion Star is his last chance to make it big. Johana’s budget-conscious line is made for the modern woman.
On the Runway: The design of Daniel’s Cocktail Dress is quite bold, and Jessica loves that he took that risk. Thankfully, the risk pays off, as Terron bids $150,000. Daniel tears up when Terron welcomes him to the Saks family.
Caprice bids $80,000 for Priscilla’s Moonlight Romper for Macy’s. Caprice and Erika bid $55,000 and $50,000, respectively, on Johana’s Tulip Dress. Erika chooses not to increase her offer; Macy’s wins.
Bret designs Skinny Pants for women despite being well-known for his menswear fashions. None of the buyers bid on the pants, and Caprice says that the only “showstopper” here is Bret’s decision not to show off his incredible menswear.
Team Jessica: Jessica’s team includes Hunter Bell, Tori Nichel, David Appel, and a duo, JesseRay and Garrett Gerson.
Meet the Team: Hunter’s style is Southern feminine meets urban sophistication. Saks Fifth Avenue once sold Hunter’s designs, and she longs to be there again. Tori’s focus is high fashion. David likes to add unexpected details to his designs. JesseRay and Garrett, besties and business partners, are anxious to get their work into department stores.
On the Runway: Ouch! Jessica’s first three designers fail to impress the buyers. Tori’s Trench Coat comes across as too tailored and structured. The buyers pass on David’s Utilitarian Jacket because the military trend is already too saturated.
Mentors and buyers agree that JesseRay and Garrett’s Shift Dress misses the mark. Jessica tells the designers (again) that the dress needs to be sexier. Despite the lack of offers coming their way, JesseRay and Garrett stand by their conservative design choices.
Hunter’s Mini Dress creates a bidding war. In the end, both Terron and Erika offer the maximum bid of $200,000, and so Hunter gets to choose with whom she wants to work. Not surprisingly, Hunter chooses Saks.
Elimination: The mentors nominate Bret (Team Nicole) and JesseRay and Garrett (Team Jessica) for elimination. Erika votes to send JesseRay and Garrett home, but Terron and Caprice both vote to eliminate Bret. Bret goes home.
