Nicki Minaj has received plenty of criticism for showing up late for last night’s top 10 performance episode on American Idol. Although he missed out on an on-air critique, competitor Curtis Finch Jr. is sticking up for the singer-rapper, explaining that there’s more to the story than angry Idol might expect.
When you’re a judge on a reality television show, arriving late for the competition is a huge no-no. But the the taboo status of a late arrival was not enough to get Nicki Minaj’s famous butt to the judge’s panel in time for the show to begin. Nicki’s absence and subsequent appearance caused a firestorm on Twitter, with most viewers angry about what they perceived as a disregard for the performers and the audience on the celeb’s part.
Backstage, Curtis Finch Jr. decided that viewers need to understand the circumstances behind Nicki Minaj’s late entrance. Turns out, Nicki did witness Curtis’ performance, even if she wasn’t sitting with her fellow judges at the time. “During the performance, she was backstage. It was literally like, ‘step, step, step, curtain, Nicki. And she was like, ‘Good job today.’” So, no, Curtis did not receive a full critique, but at least Nicki was there to enjoy the performance live.
Apparently, this is not the first time Nicki has been late. According to contestant Paul Jolley, “It’s not the first [time] and probably not the last. But I’m okay with it. I love Nicki.” Burnell Taylor added that it’s Nicki’s duty to arrive after everyone else, because “When you look that good you have to be late!”
