Multiple Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter, Jewel is currently traveling the country on her Greatest Hits Tour. The former co-host of the Bravo reality series, Platinum Hit has sold over 27 million albums worldwide. We caught up with the artist to talk about life on the road; the addition of her son, Kase Townes Murray; and how her husband, pro rodeo cowboy Ty Murray really feels about watching Dancing with the Stars!
Jewel’s new Greatest Hits album spans her career. Included on the album are “Foolish Games” with Kelly Clarkson and “You Were Meant For Me” with the Pistol Annies. She says she waited until now to release this album because she wanted to have a diverse catalog. “I really wanted to do a bunch of different styles and I need some time to get that accomplished. It starts with the first song I ever wrote and it goes chronologically and then ends with the most recent song I’ve written called, “Two Hearts Breaking,”" she explained.
Each night, while performing on her Greatest Hits Tour, Jewel doesn’t have a set list. She prefers to perform exactly what her fans want. “I like to do a different show every night. I take requests,” she says, “My fans usually drive from all over and know all songs so I have a large book of lyrics with over 500 songs, so if I don’t know it I will open my book and try and learn it real quick.”
As for fans that might not be able to make it to her concerts, or for those who constantly want more songs from Jewel, she has a solution, “I record the show every night so that people can buy it after the show so they can have some of this unrecorded material that hasn’t been released yet,” she explains.
Jewel’s husband, Ty Murray is a pro rodeo cowboy. He competed on the eighth season of Dancing with the Stars. She says they watch the ABC reality TV series and his memories of competing on the show are still very fresh. “He gets hives every time they show certain shots of rehearsal rooms he used to go in,” she said with a laugh.
In 2011, the pair welcomed a son, Kase Townes Murray. After taking a year and a half off, Jewel says she was ready to get back to work and embark on her new tour with a welcomed addition. “He’s old enough to come and have him with me because I don’t like to be away from him and I get to enjoy and show him the country, show him the world, and share music with him it’s a lot of fun.”
Along the way, Jewel says there have been several ‘wow’ moments for her in her career recalling, “When I toured for Bob Dylan he mentored me and took me under his wing and would go over my lyrics with me and give me books to read–it was pretty amazing and I got to sing with him on his tour,” she remembers, “Neil Young was the same way and then Merle Haggard I got to do a duet with him and I just grew up idolizing him and BB King was another one so those were some pretty big highlights for me!”
