This was without a doubt the most crucial episode of Face Off 4 to date because it determined which three contestants who would land in next week’s finale. The task turned to another alien concept based on one of SyFy’s own shows — “Defiance.” Who was able to impress the judges enough to make it to the finale and who was eliminated? We’ve got the details and loads of photos jammed inside this article!
For the challenge, host McKenzie Westmore told the final four they needed to choose two species from the “Defiance” universe to create an original character that would best represent their offspring. For better inspiration, the contestants were flown to Toronto, Canada to visit the “Defiance” set so they could see the alien creatures in action. Eric F. was the only one of the four remaining makeup artists who didn’t get to because of an undisclosed personal reason. I’m sure the set visit was fun and motivational, but it was primarily done as a giant commercial so SyFy could self-promote the show. Eh, whatever.
As I’ve said in the past, I’ve never been a huge fan when SyFy uses a great show like Face Off as a platform to push their other content at us. I watch Face Off to see the makeups and creativity that seeps out of the contestants. I don’t watch so I can sit through an embedded ad. But hey, at least it was a better tie-in than the terrible attempt last week to connect the “Evil Dead” remake with mummies. That still seems so strange to me.
Here’s how the final four finished alien makeups were presented on the reveal stage:
The first contestant going to the finale is… Anthony! “I like your paint scheme, I love the fact that you did add those little tufts of hair,” judge Ve Neill praised. Judge Glenn Hetrick said the face sculpture was “fantastic” because it showcased so much character. Not only did he earn the first slot in the finale, he was also awarded with the opportunity to shadow the “Defiance” makeup effects team. Once again, Anthony has proven himself as the top contender to win this entire season. He has been the best, in my opinion, since the very first challenge. Hell, he has set Face Off history having won more challenges than any other contestant. If he doesn’t win, I will be totally bummed out.
The second contestant going to the finale is… Kris! Judge Neville Page said there was a cool head-to-toe vibe of the character. Glenn, on the other, hand wasn’t as impressed with it. “It’s anatomically quite atrocious,” to which Ve argued that it was a “bitchin’ character” who wouldn’t be anatomically correct because it’s a mutant.
The third and final contestant going to the finale is… Wayne! “Your sculpture was the strongest part of your work,” Glenn said before declaring the weakest part was the mediocre paint job. Ve felt Wayne did an outstanding job and expressed her love of the work.
The person getting eliminated is… Eric F.: Glenn said it was a great piece, but Ve didn’t like it whatsoever because of the hair. Neville said that this piece proved Eric F. had elevated himself to a new level. I absolutely adore Eric F., but I just don’t think this makeup was that great. As the judges eliminated him, Eric F. went out of the competition with class and his head held high. “I didn’t want to let my wife and kids down,” he said in confessional. ” I just wanted them to be proud of me.” Eric, I truly believe they are. You were a blast to watch on the show and I’m thankful you made it as far as you did!
So now, only three aspiring special effects makeup artists remain: Anthony, Kris and Wayne. Which of the three will be crowned the season four champ? We will find out next week!
What are your thoughts on this episode? Did you agree with the judges on the best and worst finished makeups? Who of the final three do you think deserves to win the entire season? What has been your favorite makeup so far this season? Sound off and leave a comment below!
