Rush Limbaugh: Beyonce’s New Song Is Anti-Feminist

March 22, 2013 02:00 PM by Stephanie Gustafson

Rush Limbaugh hasn’t always been the most adept at interpreting lyrics and he’s proving it once again by explaining his take on a new Beyonce song. The conservative talk show host says that the notoriously pro-female singer and former American Idol guest star has gone completely anti-feminist in her latest single, Bow Down/I Been On.

Ever since she sang Independent Woman with Michelle and Kelly from Destiny’s Child, Beyonce has established herself as a woman in favor of girl power. But according to Rush Limbaugh, the lyrics to Beyonce’s new single Bow Down indicate a complete reversal in her stance on female empowerment. “Beyonce, now having been married, having been impregnated and giving birth to Blue Ivy…Beyoncé is now saying, ‘Go ahead and put up with it!’”

Rush indicates that Beyonce’s supposed new stance on feminism results from her marriage to Jay-Z.  ”She married the rich guy. She now understands it’s worth it to bow down to men.” Of course, those of us who have actually listened to the song instead of simply making judgments based on its title have arrived at a conclusion far different than that of Rush Limbaugh. Even without looking at the lyrics, it’s obvious that Beyonce was a very wealthy woman before getting hitched to Jay-Z and is certainly not financially dependent on her husband. But beyond that, there’s the fact that the very song being criticized advises fans not to think of Beyonce simply as Mrs. Carter. “I took some time to live my life, but don’t think I’m just his little wife.”

What do you think? Do Beyonce songs such as Bow Down and Single Ladies indicate a departure from feminism? Or is Rush Limbaugh’s analysis at fault? Sound off in the comments section below!
