American Idol guest star, John Bon Jovi appeared on the Katie Couric show on Friday, Mar. 15 where he discussed his career and the day he got the call that his daughter, Stephanie Rose had overdosed on heroin. Take the jump to see what he had to say.
In November, Stephanie collapsed and became unresponsive following a heroin overdose. At the time, she was at Hamilton College in upstate New York. Local police officers responded to the scene and then called in the drug task force who located small quantities of heroin as well as marijuana, and various drug paraphernalia. Stephanie was then arrested and taken into custody where she was charged with numerous misdemeanors.
According to ABC, Couric chatting with Bon Jovi about his career and how he had maintained longevity in an ever-changing industry. He attributed the band’s success to staying true to who they were as musicians instead of hopping on the trend and fad bandwagon. And as far as looking so young at 51, he explained by saying he’s an avid runner who tries to get in at least 4 or 5 miles per day.
Then Couric moved on to a more sensitive subject, his daughter Stephanie and her drug use, which led to the November 2012 overdose. The family man and father of four described getting the news as the “worst phone call ever.” But he said Stephanie got through it and is doing great now. And that he appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers throughout the ordeal.
Bon Jovi went on to say that these type of incidents take place far more than most people are aware of. “In short, that problem is much more prevalent than I knew and I cannot get over how many people I’ve met that said, ‘my son, my daughter,’ people I love, respect, admire; it happens to all sorts of families all over,” he said, “there’s a lot of pressure on kids these days [and] there’s access to things my generation didn’t have.”
Thankfully, Stephanie got through it and is doing well!
