Fashion Star Recap: Design For All Shapes And Sizes

March 23, 2013 12:00 AM by Melissa Stavarski

This week on Fashion Star, mentors Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos, and Nicole Richie challenge the remaining designers to create one piece that will appeal to all shapes and sizes. One team shines, one team fails miserably, and one team loses a second designer. Keep reading for all the details!

Buyers: Caprice Willard from Macy’s, Terron E. Shaefer from Saks Fifth Avenue, and Erika De Salvatore from Express.

Team John: Cassandra Hobbins shares that she struggled with an eating disorder in the past, adding, “Nothing is worse than not feeling comfortable in your own skin or your own clothes.” Silvia Arguello loves her design this week, though she openly admits that she has no idea if it’ll flatter the plus size model.

On the Runway: Cassandra’s Geo Tunic sparks a bidding war between Macy’s and Express. In the end, Caprice lets Erika have the design for $110,000. Erika says she loves the color blocking, adding, “The design puts great emphasis on all the right body parts.” Erika and Terron bid $50,000 and $55,000, respectively, on Amber Perley‘s Lace Dress. Erika chooses not to increase her bid; Saks wins. Neither Erika nor Terron express interest in Silvia’s A-line Coat Dress. Caprice, who believes the “smart” dress will look good on a size 2 and a size 12, bids $80,000 for Macy’s. Caprice also buys Brandon Scott‘s Collared Shirt for the same amount, saying, “It’s all about the details, the fit, and the finesse, and I think you did a wonderful job with all of those.”

Team Nicole: Johana Hernandez hopes to represent the plus size girls well, saying, “Sometimes people think that curvy girls could not be sexy or could not be pretty. That’s why I am here, to design for that woman who wants to stand out from the crowd and do it in any size.” Priscilla Barrosso feels misunderstood, sticks to ’50s inspired fashion, and hopes to prove that her clothes are not just for “skinny bitches ” Nicole fears that Daniel Silverstein‘s tree inspired dress is more piece of art and less wearable fashion.

On the Runway: Wow – absolutely no sales for Team Nicole this week. Jessica feels as if the peplum of Johana’s Peplum Dress needs to be longer, and Erika says the colors are more holiday and less spring. No matter the size, it’s UGLY. Priscilla’s Flare Dress fails miserably. Jessica questions the stomach-baring cut out, Nicole thinks both the fit and finish are wrong, and Erika doesn’t care for Priscilla’s style. Eriks tells Priscilla that she needs to move beyond her own personal likes and think more globally.  John appreciates Daniel’s “very designer” Shift Dress, but Terron thinks the tree dress is too gimmicky.

Team Jessica: David Appel‘s neurosis annoys his competitors. Hunter Bell reveals that she nearly quit designing this past year out of frustration, adding, “Fashion Star is reigniting that deep love and reassured me that I do belong in this business.” Jessica tells JesseRay and Garrett Gerson that she loves a cowl neck, adding, “It looks a little bit more elegant and flattering on bustier women. I know, because I have boobies, myself.” Really? I never noticed.

On the Runway: Caprice and Terron bid $50,000 and $55,000, respectively, on JesseRay and Garrett’s Cowl Neck Dress. Saks wins. Personally, this is my favorite look of the week, though I do wish the dress had sleeves. David fails to make a sale for the third week in a row, and Erika points out that the guy in between thin model and beefcake model (aka 90% of the male species) will not appreciate the Reversible Jacket‘s lightweight fabric clinging to his middle. Caprice and Terron pass on Hunter’s Peplum Dress. Erika, who thinks the animal print and peplum are perfect, bids $60,000 for Express.

Elimination: This week, Daniel, Johana, Priscilla, and David face elimination. The mentors agree that Daniel is so safe. But, beyond that, they leave the fate of Johana, Priscilla, and David in the hands of the buyers. Erika wants to send Priscilla home; however, both Terron and Caprice vote to eliminate David. On his way out, David says, “I put my heart and effort into every single piece. I was super happy and couldn’t have asked for more.”
