Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough, and Val Chmerkovskiy and Zendaya looked like the pairs to beat after the season premiere of Dancing With The Stars, with D.L. Hughley and Cheryl Burke taking the most criticism and the lowest score on the leaderboard. Tonight kicks off the first week with eliminations…and voting on Twitter for the encore!
Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson impressed with their Contemporary dance last week, and will tackle the Quickstep tonight. They look fantastic in jaunty jive outfits and deliver a perky effort. Len’s enthused, Bruno compliments his spirit and speed, however Carrie Ann has criticism about Ingo’s frame, which she thinks caused them to go out of sync. Arguing with Len ensues. They net 7s from the men and a 6 from Carrie Ann for 20.
Dorothy Hamill, who has a cyst in her ankle, and partner Tristan MacManus are dancing the Jive tonight. They look cute in their 50s inspired outfits with Dorothy notably in flat shoes rather than the heels she was meant to be sporting. It’s fun, but tentative and cautious. Bruno notes how often she lost her footing and provides some constructive criticism for next time. Carrie Ann says she sensed fear in her this week. Len agrees it had promise but didn’t deliver. They receive three 5s for 15.
Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff are bringing the first Jazz dance of the season next. They make an original debut, appearing one-on-top-of-the-other in an over-sized coat, and then emerge and launch into an energetic routine. Carrie Ann feels it was rocking! Len agrees this dance suits Jacoby – great entertainment! Bruno gets his jazz hands going to emphasize that it was spot on! Carrie Ann and Bruno offer up 8s while Len gives them a 7 for 23.
Victor Oritz and Lindsay Arnold have footage shown of an argument they had during practice this week – it really felt ‘staged’, but anywho… Tonight they’re performing a Jive. They look hot in red costumes, and I love their Bruno Mars tune ‘Runaway’, but the dance is really choppy at times on Victor’s end. Len confirms that they didn’t knock his socks off – it was scruffy. Bruno says the stylistic points are out the window – Victor looked like a Zumba dancer. Carrie Ann admires his attack, but urges him to work on his feet. It’s a trio of 6s for 18.
Wynona Judd and Tony Dovolani are tackling the Quickstep this week, which is physically challenging for the country singer. Tony babies her in practices. They make an entrance on police minibikes and perform a very measured Quickstep. Bruno says it started well but ended up in a casual stroll – the performance has to continue. Carrie Ann likes Wynonna’s frame and posture, but says she’s playing it safe. Len agrees – the engine was running but she never got out of first gear. It’s 6s across the board for 18.
Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy are at the top of the leaderboard going into tonight’s Jive performance. Zendaya’s dressed as a flapper as they take the floor, with Val looking simply delicious in a black shirt and pinstriped pants. They’re energetic, stylish, and excellent. Loving this pair! The judges also think it was fantastic. Bruno enthuses that a star is born – big time. Bruno and Carrie Ann give 9s with Len holding out at 8 – a total of 26.
Andy Dick, who is facing the stress of Dancing With The Stars without drinking, and partner Sharna Burgess are dancing Jazz this week. They deliver an edgy and sometimes comic performance to Poker Face. It’s cool and different! Len says it was a laugh and admires Andy’s commitment – it was fun. Bruno raves that it was outlandish and crackers – he loved it. Carrie Ann says they nailed it! They receive 7s from Carrie Ann and Bruno and a 6 from Len for 20.
Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd are doing a Jive tonight and hoping to do better than last week which was likened to a Chippendales dancer doing the Foxtrot. Sean and Peta take the floor in a lifeguard costume and swimsuit respectively. Sean handles the routine solidly, but again it seems a bit like a muscle-bound guy doing aerobics. Bruno hollers for Sean to save him. “Shark!” Carrie Ann gives a little constructive advice, and Len says he didn’t really get it – the theme took over. They net 7s from Carrie Ann and Bruno and a 6 from Len for 20.
Alexandra ‘Aly’ Raisman and Mark Ballas are up next with the Quickstep. Again, it’s a flapper theme for the costumes – this time in cobalt blue. They give a solid and emotive performance – great! Carrie Ann says it was the best Quickstep of the night so far, Len calls it terrific, and Bruno likens it to watching a bluebird or something – he loved it. They net three 8s for 24.
Lisa Vanderpump and boy-toy partner, Gleb Savchenko are performing a Jazz routine dressed as a stewardess and pilot. It’s fun, but Lisa still looks careful or cautious about her moves. Len says it never quite took off – it wasn’t brilliant. Bruno jokes about Lisa not flying commercial and then gives her some advice about finishing moves. Carrie Ann compliments Lisa on her refinement, but says she needs to let loose more. It’s three 6s for 18.
D.L. Hughley and Cheryl Burke are facing an uphill battle after being slammed last week. Things get pretty tense between the two during practice this week, but they make up of course… They’re doing the Quickstep tonight and from what I see it’s ten times better than last week – very solid! Bruno tells him he did some tough runs and did a good job. Carrie Ann says he came back and she can see the work he put in. Len says he improved over last week and that’s the secret – well done. They net 5s from Carrie Ann and Len, and a 6 from Bruno for 16.
Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough are finishing tonight’s episode with their Jazz routine. It’s a futuristic theme with Kellie in a cute space-age two-piece and Derek shirtless – and flawless jazz dancing and lifts! In a different league. Carrie Ann enthuses that her boobs nearly popped out – amazing! Len says last week was a spark, this week was a fire. Bruno growls that it was a smash hit and rants and raves about the many ways it was superb. They get 9s from Carrie Ann and Bruno and an 8 from Len for 26.
Once again, Kellie and Zendaya held their own at the top, with others, such as Aly Raisman and Jacoby Jones on their tails. Who did you think danced the best this week? Who was most improved?
