Tonight marks the first elimination episode for season 16 of Dancing with the Stars. It’s hard to say who will go…DL Hughley came in a clear last place on the leader board, but as we all know, votes do count for something on this show. Viewers just might end up with another big surprise this week.
The first elimination episode begins with a great number choreographed by the one and only Jason Gilkison. The performers include both professionals and members of the Dancing with the Stars troupe. I hate the actual eliminations in elimination episodes, but gosh, they do feature some excellent dancing!
After a quick recap of last night’s show, it’s time for some results. The first teams sent into sweet bliss of safety are Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson, Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd, and Wynonna Judd and Tony Dovolani. Victor Ortiz and new pro Lindsay Arnold aren’t as lucky, landing in the danger zone.
Surprise, surprise….16-year-old Disney star has been chosen to perform her routine for a second time. Last night, viewers were asked to tweet their favorite dance, with the winner receiving an encore. I’m glad they chose Zendaya, because minus a few timing issues, her Monday night performance was excellent. Personally, I would have chosen Kellie Pickler for an encore, but hey, as long as it’s not DL Hughley, I’m happy.
Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovskiy look even better tonight than they did yesterday — too bad they can’t get new judges’ scores to factor into their results. Speaking of which, time for more results! Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas head to safety. No surprises there. What is a bit surprising is the fact that DL Hughley and Cheryl Burke are sent into safety. Really? Who voted for this guy? I can understand voting for a bad dancer if he or she is likeable, but DL was downright nasty to Cheryl Burke this past week. I understand that viewers like to see improvement, but still…I just don’t get it.
Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff join the rest in safety, as do Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovskiy and Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough. I’m glad these teams are all safe, because they performed some of the strongest dances last week. Of course, this means that Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko are in the bottom two.
Before we find out who is going home, we’re treated to a special performance from Josh Groban. I think he’s a great singer, but I always like that Dancing with the Stars has dancers perform along with the special guest each week. This way, when I can’t stand the musician, at least I can watch amazing dancing. Tonight, So You Think You Can Dance alums and frequent Dancing with the Stars pros Chelsie Hightower and Dmitry Chaplin dance, looking stunning as usual.
The final round of results leaves Dorothy Hamill and Tristan MacManus in safety…and Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess in the danger zone. But luckily for Andy and Sharna, Dorothy and Tristan have a surprise up their sleeves. Dorothy explains that she’s decided to withdraw from the competition, as her doctor has advised her to quit dancing for the foreseeable future. She’s clearly bummed about having to leave the competition, but Tristan assures her that she did an amazing job.
I’m really sad to see Dorothy Hamill leave. I think she had a lot of potential — just look at her beautiful performance last week! I hope that she is able to recover from her injury…and I hope that DWTS has the sense to ask her back when that recovery occurs!
