It may have only been the second week of Dancing With The Stars season 16 but country music singer, Kellie Pickler showed she’s definitely in it to win it. Pickler and pro partner, Derek Hough didn’t waste any time getting down to business on Monday night’s episode delivering a stellar jazz routine that wowed the judges. Keep reading for more details.
According to ABC, Pickler had never danced jazz before and instantly thought of Broadway and “jazz hands.” But it didn’t take her long to realize she was way off the mark. They would be dancing a more modern, contemporary jazz number. As they began to rehearse, she was lost and admitted, “I’ve never seen a dance like this before,” she said, “I don’t know what the hell’s going on.”
Lucky for Pickler, Hough had the skills and the vision not only to create a memorable contemporary jazz routine but to help her to perfect it as well. He helped her by tapping into her cheerleading skills by incorporating sharp side-by-side moves into the routine.
While Pickler had no clue what she was doing, she was up for the challenge and was happy to push the boundaries and take risks to get it right, and in the end, it paid off in a big way.
Carrie Ann Inaba gave Pickler and Hough a standing ovation and said, “That was friggin’ amazing…I’m blown away and can’t wait for next week!” Len Goodman added, “Last week was a spark [but] this is the fire!”
Pickler and Hough went on to score 26 points, the highest score of the night, tied with Disney Channel star Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy.
What did you think of Kellie and Derek’s jazz routine? And who is your favorite so far this season? Sound off in the comments and let us know.
