Nicki Minaj has been compared to the diva version of Simon Cowell, for the American Idol judge is not afraid to say exactly what she thinks. But according to Nicki, these controversial statements were never intended to cause so much drama.
There’s no doubt that Nicki Minaj is the most controversial member of American Idol’s judging panel this year. The rapper-singer has been nothing but blunt, often angering viewers with her harsh words. On the other hand, many viewers love the sassy attitude Nicki has injected into the show. Yes, some people actually do like Nicki Minaj! It all depends on who you ask.
In a recent press conference, Nicki admitted that she had expected to be a controversial judge from the get-go. Her response when asked to join American Idol’s judging panel? “I felt like, ‘Okay. I know everybody’s just going to hate me,’” But she still said yes, because in the end, she wants to help develop the talents of up-and-coming musicians.
Many of Nicki Minaj’s most polarizing moments weren’t meant to be controversial. The celeb insists that she’s just being herself. “The way people react to what I say to the contestants, it’s like, that’s really how I act. But people think it’s kind of strange.” Nicki listed her marriage proposal to Kree Harrison as an example, explaining that, while she didn’t think much of it at the time, she now realizes she’s the only judge to ever do this on live TV. But she adds that this really isn’t all that different than how she acts on a daily basis. “I definitely didn’t have a preconceived notion of who I was going to be on that panel. … If I’m polarizing, I’m polarizing.”
